Just unpacked my old turntable
« on: 5 Apr 2011, 05:54 pm »
Getting things all set up for when the HT-3’s get here. I just unpacked my old Technics SL-1700 turntable I have not used it for about 15 years plugged it in and it runs great only problem the tone arm got out of its holder and bent the stylus. Can anybody suggest a replacement cartridge that would work well with this turntable? The current one is an Empire 2002EE or should I just get a new stylus and use the original cartridge?

Thanks for any help.

I'm running an AT440MLa in my SL1200MKIIPK2, and it works great. I have also put a Grado Gold1 (Longhorned) in it with great results. I think they share the same pivot to spindle distance and tonearm style so they should be similar. I'm sure others will chime in with their favorite cartridges for this table.

Well then.  For those of us who lost their turntable in the last move, and want to have a decent but not super expensive table and arm for shows and retro visitors, what would you suggest Wayner?

I do like the Technics SL1200MKIIPK2, but they are now over $1,000. The Rega RP1 is a great low budget table, and if you would like to keep it just under $1,000, less cartridge, the Rega P3-24 is certainly entertaining.

Dennis, I HIGHLY recommend outfitting the RP1 with a new cart.  I was using a P1 that came with the same stock cart.  Went up to an Ortofon 2M Blue and was a hugely significant difference.  The 2M Blue is $200 but I'm sure there are plenty of other carts out there much cheaper that due a heck of a job.  I just felt the stock Ort really didn't do the table justice.

Thanks.  I'll see how much change is left over after my kitchen addition.

Hi   I'm probably neither.  But there are going to be a lot of vinyl guys at the Capital Audio Fest in July.

For the money, I think that Rega (either TT) has the best tone arms out there. Nice queing as well. I think I am not a fan of their cartridges, but may be OK, to get you going.

I just don't know of any other table at that price point that could top it (or come close to it) in value and performance.

What music do you listen to?

Got it from a dealer over near Jim.  Cost $400.  Lots of places selling online for $445.
