Listening to a independent label disc this evening for the first time.Brand new, shiny and clean.Heard the last track of the first side start to come to a close and approached the TT just to see the Ittok sail past the end of the run out, over the label and past the spindle accompanied by that horrible scraping noise. It was with trepidation that I scoped the stylus and then popped it on another well known record.Fortunately no harm appears to have been done. The record in question has a very fine run out groove.I'll be wary of new discs that look like this in the future.A close shave
In my more carefree days of youth, when vinyl cleaning was limited to the occasional wipe with a carbon brush, fluffed up, less exotic stylii would occasionally do this.It probably is the first time it's happened with a totally clean stylus - certainly the first time I can remember in at least 20 years. One of the reasons my heart sank yesterday, is that the last time I do remember was with a Nag MP 11 Boron. In this case the reason for the skate across the whole surface was that the diamond had broken off the cantilever. I take it then that skipping past the run out is not entirely uncommon?
It's never happened to me (and really hope it doesn't - my disks are all fine). I use a weight/stabiliser and made sure I had one that didn't interfere with cartridge at full run out. Davey, your original post caused me to check and the edge of the cart/head shell would touch the vertical side of the weight just before the stylus would hit the label edge. That seems pretty good superficially but if the cart moved inboard at a rate of knots the way you describe, the cartridge might just bounce back sideways to somewhere amongst the tracks with just as awful results as hitting the label. I don't intend to experiment but I can see I'll now have nightmares until I've safely played each new disk. Thanks mate!
This just happened to me last week with my Transfiguration Phoenix MC cartridge! My first time as well. I am writing from my office, and at the moment, I just can't remember which record I was playing. Needless to say, it was a full sprint to the TT - a real, live OJ moment through the living room, over the couch, around the big chair desperately grasping for the tonearm. Holy Sh** !! The good news is there doesn't seem to be any damage to the stylus. The noise was horrendous, and something that any audiophile would never want to hear. Hey... it's analog, which means there's always something.... Still, even with all the tweaks and potential glitches, I love vinyl!
Pretty strange. My arm doesn't have that kind of travel. It won't go far enough to touch the label...
