Good question, when I was the UK distributor for VSA I tested the VR-1 stand around various dealers and had it reviewed together with the VR-1 by Hi-Fi News magazine (by technical reviewer Keith Howard), we did not have one favourable review. I ran this all by Albert at the time but told him I had come up with two options.
Option 1: was a stand made by a company fairly local to me and used extensively by one of my UK dealers for both speaker and equipment stands; Something Solid. I sent a pair of VR-1's off to Something Solid and they manufactured a stand in their XF range which was custom made for the VR-1's profile.
This stand is simply outstanding at letting the VR-1 breathe, you will get an air of openess you will find hard to obtain on any other stand out there, only problem is it's not to everyones taste visually as it's quite industrial looking and as we also found, does not usually posses the WAF! lol
Option 2: this was THE best stand we EVER came across, the iF Designs Reference. Regretably, the owner had to close the business due to personal reasons so only a few stands were ever made but I again had a set of VR-1's sent to the owner/designer who came up with a dedicated stand that could have the centre column matched to any of the VR-1 finishes. This was one of the most techincally advanced stands out there, alot of science went into designing a stand that had zero tonal quality/colouration. My own set of VR-1's were on a set of these and on demo's at dealers and with customers the setup was usually met with wide open mouths!
Roger Stone who ran iF Designs was a great chap to deal with and put many man hours into the creation of this custom stand, it was a process of matching many component parts together to get every ounce possible from the VR-1's (Roger did conduct many tests and did find that stone and granite was not the best material to use so don't immediately opt for classy looking stone stands).
My advice would be to try and find a specialist stand designer to custom make something for the VR-1. Stands that we found to kill the VR-1's were ones from Target and Partington, especially mass loaded stands.
