Deciding on a VMPS subwoofer
« on: 20 Mar 2011, 05:58 pm »
I'm currently looking for a single or pair of subwoofers and have always considered VMPS subs.  I had an M&K mx250 sub with dual 12's in a push pull configuration and loved its accuracy.  I haven't replaced it yet because I have been dissatisfied with many others I've heard.  The main listening area is about 14' (w) x 26' (L) x 7.5' (H) (2,730 cubic feet) with carpet over concrete floors.  It's a section of a partially finish basement that also opens up to another finished room and an unfinished section.  The listening position is about 10-12 feet away and the placement is along the 14' wall.  Given the size of VMPS subs, I would be limited to one sub unless I go with dual VMPS Dedicated Subwoofers, which have a manageable width of about 14.5 inches.  But realizing how much I enjoyed the push-pull accuracy, I am also considering the New Original Subwoofer/215 with the new OMG drivers, which I haven't seen on their website and am not sure if available yet.  Well, I can find out about that from VMPS.  With that being said, if the size of the VMPS is not possible due to objections from the wife, other possibilities include a pair of the pending re-release of Hsu TN1220ho II with 12 inch diameters each or maybe emailing the company that took over ACI to see if they have plans on releasing an updated version of the ACI Force XL subs, which are highly regarded and of modest size.  I'm looking for musical/accurate bass that extends low above anything else.  While I like some impact for movies, it doesn't necessarily have to move the house off the foundation.

Since my other two options are not released yet, I'm not expecting anyone to have experience with those with the exception of the original Hsu TN1220ho subs.  But does anyone have experience with a pair of reasonably priced alternatives or a pair of original Hsu tn1220ho subs relative to a single VMPS or dual VMPS Dedicated Subs with the MegaWoofer upgrade?  Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated too and based on my three choices you can probably guess the budget range as these are all modestly priced yet highly regarded.  And by the way, if you try emailing me, I'm still in the new "introductory phase" and will be unable to respond until I have a few more posts.  Thanks for all your help.

I have a pair of older VMP"S smaller subs, EQ's with an old richter scale. I definitely think that a pair is the way to go and you might get your accuracy via one of those new external digital sub eq's.

I can't comment on the smaller VMPS subs, but I do have a Larger in my livingroom setup. I find this sub blends well, is fast and clean, never boomy. I have been through a few subs, SVS 16-46, a DIY 15" sono sub and I still have my twin sealed Avalance 18" subs. It's hard to beat the impact of the twin 18's but for a musical sub, the VMPS Larger is a great sub. I even think dual Largers with the new big bump PRs would be great for movies and come close to what I'm getting out of the 18s.

If you have the room, dual subs are the way to go. I prefer them to one large sub.

Thanks for the information and help.  From what I've read on this and other posts it appears dual subs paired with an EQ is the way to go.  While the Larger Sub would most likely be ideal, I think it's safe to say I won't be able to sneak 2 of them into the house. Therefore, if I go with dual VMPS subs it will pretty much have to be dual Dedicated Subs; not like that's a bad thing.  The room is a dual purpose two-channel/home theater room and was a little surprised about the low frequency cutoff of 24Hz for a sub with two 12 inch drivers, which obviously includes the passive radiator.  But I'm sure that covers about 97% of material so that's probably me being too picky.

I have found that even with a crossover of 80 hz there is still some directionality, or locatability with just one sub. I have mine in the corners of the room, l and r.  Maybe if you put some flowers on them and call them plant stands you can get away with something larger....
