I just wanted go give some feedback on the sound quality achieved with my Alix solution described in nycparamedic thread above.
I have a home set up in a small but dedicated room with very controlled acoustics. Strictly 2 channel listening is my game since I am a guy with gray hair with many years in HIFI.
Source is the Linux based Alix PC with a laptop acting as NFS server and music control with GMPC player into the Lavry DA11. Files are standard 44/16 with everything up to 24/96.
Looking like this

I run an active set up with ATC SCM 100ASL speakers and two XTZ subs looking like this.

The sound I get from this set up is pretty mazing

. Resolved, detailed, warm and effortless. I can play silly loud with very low levels of distortion. Tried several DAC's but in the end the DA11 was the one that didn't leave a fingerprint. For me, it disappears completely, the ultimate result in my view.
I really like to thank Nick for all support and advice regarding the Alix solution. I owe him many pints for it.
If you think you could arrange the Linux installation your selves or by a friend, don't hesitate to go this way. Its soooo good.
cheers
