PMC FB1(i)
« on: 14 Mar 2011, 01:54 am »
Wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to compare the + version with the i version. I am looking at the two sets used and the difference is approx 1k. I haven't has the opportunity to hear the new i version yet.

Thanks

$1000 for a tweeter????? from what you have been looking for ....save the $1000 and put it elseware in your system.
Just remember, this is a silkdome to silkdome tweeter...they are of the same family, not like the old metal domes in the first editions.

I've heard both but it's your ears and it's your money, audioman. The tweeter isn't the only upgrade according to PMC - also the crossover and the cabinetry. Another consideration is that you can already see the difference in resale value - that gap isn't going to get any smaller. People are asking ( and paying ) more for the i-series for a reason, you'd think. Also, is it the FB1 or the FB1+ which you are comparing against the FB1i ? If it's the + series, I believe it has a silk dome tweeter ( don't think it's the same as the one in the FB1i but could be wrong ) but if it's the FB1, it's got a metal dome tweeter and that's a very different animal. Make sure of which model you're actually looking at.

if they are the fb1+,they are built superbly, and the resale on $2000 compared to $3100 is self explanitory.the gap will get much smaller from $3100.
Stay away from metal domes!!

Unclear on your point - please expand on it. What I was getting at was that if audioman went with the FB1i's and decided down the road to re-sell them for whatever reason, they would command a higher price than the FB1 or FB1+ and he's probably sell them faster. At this stage, the FB1's are going to sell slow and/or cheap and most folks would take the i series over the + series if the choice is there and they'll pay a higher price for them - maybe because they sound better ( although I suspect you'll dispute that ) or maybe simply because they are the latest and greatest. I wish audioman could hear these and compare them - I'd love to hear what he would have to say...

You will be happy with the "+" older version of the PMC.  It is obvious PMC price of admission is high, however if you can afford it, I would go for the "i" or the signature version.  The "i" version(s) like D.D. mentioned is/are totally different speakers with thicker wood, reworked crossover, nicer looking, and better tweeters etc.  Worthy of the extra $1k (depends if you have it readily disposable).  Ultimately, the "i" version lets you hear more details in music.  The "signature" is a tweaked "i" version.   :thumb:

In the end, it is still your ears and pocket.   :D
