noisy volume control
« on: 18 Feb 2011, 08:30 pm »
I recently picked up an old Fisher RS-2004A receiver.

It sounds great and I really like the analog meters for the volume and FM signal strength. The only problem is the noisy volume control.  It causes a lot of static and causes one of the stereo channels to go in and out.  Can anybody give me any suggestions on how to fix this?  Thanks.

Unplug it and try spraying the pots and contacts with Deoxit Contact Cleaner. Let dry and then see if that helps. If it's still noisy, you may have issues with out-of-spec components. (But more technically knowledgeable members will need to comment on that.)

I agree with Atlplasma, I have used De-oxit before and it has ALWAYS worked wonders or completely solved the problem.

Use a cleaner that does not leave a lubricating residue, unless it is specifically intended for plastic contact potentiometers. Test that it evaporates completely. Work the knob while spraying the cleaner into a hole in the body of the pot. If the pot is sealed, shoot it down through the shaft hole. Leave time for it to fully evaporate before turning it back on.

To be more specific, the product is Deoxit D5 and is recommended by Frank Van Alstine, and used to bring back old vintage controls back to life. If this stuff doesn't cure it, the pot may actually be damaged.

Maybe before going to all that trouble, turn off the unit and just spin the noisy controls around a bit.  Sometimes it's just a little oxidation that needs cleaning off of the contact.  Spinning the controls around usually does the job.

Thanks, I'll give this a try.

They sell it at radio shack in a 2pack with Caig Gold, or order just the D5 from Partsexpress

This stuff leaves no residue:
