Power Cord for 36.5 and Sony 9100ES
« on: 5 Dec 2010, 07:31 pm »
Hi All,
My first post to this forum.  I am happy owner of the 36.5 Preamp and Sony 9100ES.  I am currently using stock power cords and am ready to move into 'audiophile' cords.  I know cords need to have synergy with the rest of the system.  I am currently considering Synergistic Research Hologram A's for the 36.5 and power supply of the Sony and Hologram D for the CD player.  Would love to hear any comments from anyone else using Synergistic Research cables with Modwright stuff or power cords you have used/recommend that have brought out the best in Modwright equipment.
Many thanks in advance.  Dave.

I am currently using stock power cords and am ready to move into 'audiophile' cords.
My suggestion is to try different companies and their different level of cords.   A specific cord on your CD Player may/will sound different when it is used on a power amp, Pre Amp, etc.  More costly does not always equate to better sound.

Try many cords in your rig and not just one.  Something cheaper like a Shunyata Venom 3 to try out as you can purchase many of them to install and not break the bank.

Find a dealer who is willing to let you try out many cords in your rig.  If you cannot find one locally, then buying used or online is the next option.  The Cable Company has a way to try out cables and they will also recommend some.

Buying used from the 'Gon is a great place as you can usually sell them off for the same price you paid for them if you do not like them.

I tried a bunch and have settle on the Shunyata and DH Labs cords for my rig and my preferences, but like I stated in the beginning, try out as many different companies as you can.  It is fun, but time consuming, to try out different cables in your setup (IC's, Speaker, Power, etc.)

Do you also use Power Conditioning in your rig?  Something else to consider.

As I'm sure you know there are 100's of cables and was trying to get a couple of recommendations to narrow things down.  I've tried a few already that I can borrow locally, but is really a miniscule selection overall compared to everything out there.  Since this group reaches all over the world I was hoping for what people use on there 36.5 and 9100ES PS and CD player.

I can borrow from the Cable Co, but I believe that you need to use 10 percent of the retail price of what you borrowed on a purchase.

I do use a Bybee Power Conditioner and am moving to 2 direct lines with TeslaPlex receptacles.

Thanks for your reponse.

I use Chris Venhaus' "Flavor" PCs in my rig. A Flavor 4 for the 36.5+ and a Flavor 1 on the Sony CDP with a Flavor 4 on the Sony's PSU.

I haven't messed around much with power cords. I put these in, let them settle and that was it.

I've tried several power cords for my Modwright 9.0 preamp and settled on Pangea AC-9.  You can't beat the performance to price ratio on these cords.  This cord out performed cables costing 2-3 times it's price.  I use the same power cable on my Modwright Oppo.

A follow-up.  I finally decided on LessLoss cables.  The teslaplex with stock powercords was too analytical sounding for me.  Some recordings were a bit too sharp and therefore fatiguing.  LessLoss cables warmed up the sound.  I am also considering trying Telwire in the future.

With the direct lines, I do not need a power conditioner and the sound is amazing.  By far the biggest change I've heard when changing something.
