Compare the Omega MQ5LB to the 4.5 alinco

Hi Louis, I'm sure you've done comparisons.  Can you please comment on the major differences between the new 4.5" alinco driver and the Omega MQ5LB 5" driver.

Physically, are they the same size?  Sonic differences?

I was going to get the MQ5LB 5" drivers to replace the Fostex 127e.  Should I wait on the newer 4.5" alincos?

Thanks!  :thumb:

Is there any news on the 4.5" AlNiCo driver?

Well, I have had that question front and center for over a year now, yet I keep returning to this site each day for the answer. I am afraid that if I stop looking each day, Louis will put up an "Introductory Special" that I will miss out on...... you know, the 'first 50 folks to pony up the dough will get a pair for 25% off' kind of deal.  So here I lurk, with a stunning 2A3 SET amp which sounds lovely on my Super 5's, and which should be 140% with the Alnico drivers....... my amp is more patient than I.

Louis is a Saint, so I must cut him some slack.

Cheers, Hank

I know this thread is old, but I haven't run across an answer yet.

Louis, what is the story with the Alnico 5 inchers?  (I know you don't release until it meets your standards and much is beyond your control.)

Thanks, JLM;

I was going to be polite and wait another year before querying Louis; but your question caused me to get eager all over again. My Super 5's in burled ash are getting eager too...... looking for younger, even quicker, and deeper drivers to replace the MQ5LB's that have graced them until now. So I will add my voice to yours and ask if their long gestation means a more beautiful driver, or is it still born?

BTW, I 'listened' to the Great Performances presentation of Gustavo Dudamel's debut with the LA Phil today, playing Adams "City Noir" and Mahler's "Titan"........ Oh god, if the AlNiCo drivers can improve on what I heard....... I'm in!

Cheers, Hank in Eugene

Hi Guys,

Thanks and this one is a tough one. It really came down to money a lot of it and quantities. Also i would have to adjust the voice coil diameter just to make it economical and reduce the tooling charges. I will revisit this and see if if I can put together a package that would work. I can get the motor structure to fit the basket. Got to work out The VC details though and the quantity issue.

Also I would never sell anything as a pre run or sell product that isn't finalized.

Thanks again,
Louis

How are the prototypes sounding? Will the 4.5 Alnico be the equal of the 6" and 8" Alnicos? I like how fast and accurate the 4.5s are, so waiting for the 4.5 Alnicos might be a good upgrade, but if it's not going to happen the larger Alnicos are definitely a step up from the 4.5 ferrites.
