iTouch 'phones recommendations for $50, likely used
« on: 14 Dec 2010, 03:33 am »
I am picking up a used 1st gen 8gb iTouch (my first Apple device), and am looking for some recommendations for a set of headphones that I can plug directly into the device - not looking to go with an outboard amp at this time.

I will use the Touch mostly as a remote for my Bolder modded SB3, but will sometimes listen to the Touch too - thus the interest in headphones.

The only phones I have used much are older Sony DJ500 units - pretty basic over the ear.

I see used phones over at Headfi, and locally on Kijiji and Craigslist.

1 - Sennheiser CX500 for $20. (local)
2 - Shure SE210 for $40. (local)
3 - MB Quart qp220 for $40. (Headfi)
4 - M-Audio IE10 Clear (Ultimate Ear SuperFi 3 Studio) for $50. (Headfi)

I am open to closed or iem style.

Thoughts on any of these?

Thanks guys,

Mark

For the record, I went with the Sure SE210's locally for $40.

A vast improvement over the stock headphones on my wife's Creative Zen.

I am still very tempted by a set of full cans though, for home use.

Those darn MB Quarts are taunting me - I used to lust after MB Quart car audio gear, so I know they build good stuff!

Well, as with many things audio, the more research you do, the more you spend...

I ended up buying a used set of Beyerdynamic DT770's (80 ohms), and ordered a new portable amp - the Fiio e5.

Should be the ticket for listening around the house (not likely static in one area, so a portable headamp seemed the best road), and when I want to go out, I will use the buds.

Why not the 32 ohm version? Which is easier to drive.

Avoid IEMs if u can.
Great for SQ and isolation is the short term, bad for your hearing in the long term.
Ask your friendly neighbourhood audiologist!

I would suggest these: http://www.head-direct.com/product_detail.php?p=29

Even the PK2s, which I use from my iphone are pretty good without an amp, although an amp makes them shine!
