Grounding the Bugle
« on: 19 Mar 2004, 06:20 pm »
I am almost ready to put the Bugle PS and preamp circuit board into a chassis and wanted to be sure I did the best thing for grounding.

I also am making a power cord... so, I have a choice to bring the AC ground to the IEC, or not to.

What's the best way to ground regardless?  This may be in the instructions and I missed it.. or didn't understand.. but, I want to ground the best way possible.

So, what would you do?

Thanks,
Carl

Best grounding is very system dependent.  The main reason to use Earth ground on power cord is for safety reasons - in case of fault the chassis does not become hot.  It is not needed for quiet system.  In fact you can float an entire system from Earth and still be quiet (look at your TV).

For signals, it is actually better to float the Bugle from Earth and use the linestage chassis ground as the signal reference.  It is carried to Bugle via interconnects.  This then becomes the reference potential for the turntable.

Nonetheless, I have to wholeheartedly recommend connecting the power cord Earth ground to the Bugle.  It is pragmatic.  And yet we can still achieve a humless system.  Sometimes it just takes a bit of experimentation.
