database..?

So how does everyone archive their music collection?

For what I have on my hard drive, not a big deal- I use Media Monkey and it keeps things pretty well organized. But I need a way to keep track of what I have on cd and my wish list...

PLUS I have just merged households with my bf and he has all of his music on cds, I have a lot of cds, plus I have a lot on an external hard drive. My ultimate goal is to get everything digitized and going completely discless. I guess it would be a huge waste of time (which I don't have) to type everything we own into a database or spreadsheet, since I do plan to upload them.

Today I started a spreadsheet with cds I want. I guess the best thing is to just compare that list to the Media Monkey library? I just wish I could have it all in one place. Is there an archiving program that will export to excel (or can I do that from MM?)??

I am a bit OCD and dabble with database design at work and can see myself taking this WAY too far! Just curious what other people do.

I have 6000+ cds and I use Oranage CD for cataloging.  It's not freeware, but works well

Since I use itunes I go to File then print and save a PDF of all my albums with artwork and tracks.  I keep a backup of it on all my backup drives so I know what I have.

Also, I keep a PDF of it in my gmail account so I can access it from anywhere when music shopping if I want to make sure I don't have a certain Cd.  Works really well.

How do you keep track??

Ooo. Thanks. Saving file on gmail is a great idea- then I can access it from my Iphone. I'm going to do that right now.

OrangeCD catalog looks sweet- but can you customize it?? I would like to have a field for the library call # for things I want to borrow. Can you add things manually (wish list that you don't have a barcode for?)

Okay to expand on this... How do you keep track of where a cd is physically??? I could never have time to organize by genre or alphabetically and then things would constantly have to be rearranged when new items were added I think... I think it would be a losing battle, as getting them back in the same place where they were removed from would be unlikely for either me of bf... and once I get it all digitized, that won't be a need anyhow, I suppose.

I just started ripping cds this weekend :-) It may take a while!
