VPI Classic one or JA Michell Gyrodec SE
« on: 26 Dec 2010, 06:30 pm »
I have a choice/chance to upgrade from my starter Dual TT to one of the above nice units:

1. The VPI will be  stock/NIB.

2. The Gyrodec SE is onsale/used here by a fellow forum member with the technoarm upgrade and a nice Dynavector cart.

Prices are very similar, both seem very tempting - which one should I go for...

Please advise!

VPI. It is a classic and very well built. Several AC members have one, I'm sure they will chime in. Also built and designed here in the USA.

Not to take away a sale from forum member but I would go after the VPI too.
Nice choices though.

The VPI Classic is one helluva' value at $2750.00 today.....that unipivot 10.5" arm with fluid damping is stellar and the rest of the pieces are pretty fine, too :thumb:

I'd give serious kudos over any TT with 9" arm merely due to the 12% better tracking (physics is your friend on that one)...new or used...in it's price range.

Unless you had one of the later DUAL's (CS5000, 7000), your arm was a bit shorter than 9"....so you'll REALLY notice the better tracking of the 10.5" VPI arm here.  I did (as a former owner of the otherwise very good DUAL 701 model)

It's especially better priced if you are in the US where the VPI Classic is a better value than any European deck whose prices naturally rise due to a US Distributor that takes their cut of every sale...making them incrementally worse values, generally.  Same issue when VPI sells outside of US....the distrib in that country takes their cut and the value quotient declines.

After ~100 hours, I notice no off speed issues all-too-common with unregulated belt drives.....this praise comes from someone that has a general preference for direct drive decks, btw.

VPI seriously outdid themselves on this one :thumb: Seriously, that's my opinion no crap, man

I have the VPI Classic w/Benz Micro Wood SL and it is just fabulous.  This combo has to be the best value in a TT/Cartridge combo out there right now although you could sub the Benz with the new Lyra Delos or a higher end Grado.  The Benz matches up perfectly spec-wise to the 10.5i SE.

As an owner of a VPI Aries, I'd vote for the Michell :)

As an owner of a modified VPI TNT, I'd vote for the VPI Classic.  The Classic comes with a good arm as part of the package.  IMO, few tables better it and then only marginally.  The Classic works very well with an AT-OC9 (I mean WORKS REALLY WELL!!) at a bargain price.

The Mitchell is a very good table, but does not provide the reference quality of the Classic.

Have you compared them both with the same arm and cartridge in the same room with the same gear?

Nope, but I have never compared an ARC SP-6b to a Herron VTSP-3a head-to-head using the same equipment either.  The ARC is pretty good, but the Herron is in a completely different league and arguably without peer.

But that's not the point, is it.  The arms that work well with a Mitchell might not perform up to their potential on the Classic and vice versa.  If therefore follows that cartridges that play nicely with certain arms might not work well in other arms.  So that comparison doesn't really mean much, does it.  The point is that IMO the Classic, as it comes stock with an arm that is matched to the table, provides a reference (or VERY NEAR) quality platform while the Mitchell is merely very good even with a heavily modded Rega arm.

To me the Classic just sounds "right": timing, musical warmth, dead silence, deep bass, brings me closer to the performance than other tables I've heard (given a decent cartridge).

I favor the VPI.  YMMV.

In what areas do you think the Mitchell betters the VPI?  Maybe you have different listening preferences that need to be taken into account.  What have you heard in a side-by-side comparison (even not considering my comments on the value of that comparison)?

I think you are offering up a lot of your opinion as absolute fact here; or at least allowing your personal taste to completely lace your statements with one sidedness.

The Herron is a great preamplifier, but to even believe it has no equal is foolish. That would come completely down to individual opinion, and system preferences.

Its comparison to the ARC is also irrelavant since that preamp is considerably older in design then the Herron piece.

Saying, also that everyone would prefer the Herron in that comparison is narrow sighted.

Getting back to the turntables at hand, I agree that it would be difficult to compare exactly the same tonearm and cartridge on the tables; it wouldn't be out of the question to considering testing each in the same systems.

The bottom line is both tables are very good; what each person wants in their system varies and one table might suit the other better.

The Michell design has been around and improved upon for decades; and has always provided a steady platform, as well as garnered favorable reviews.

The VPI classic has been around a couple of years, and has been raved about; as well as poorly reviewed upon. Not everyone feels the same about any piece of equipment.

A very well thought out and written post.

I have to admit I found the statement that the VPI Classic is a reference platform and the Michell (it's Michell not Mitchell!) merely very good a bit comical.

Ironic also that the less than 2 year old VPI is "the Classic" (now superceded by the Classic 2 and 3 at grossly higher prices I might add) while the almost 30 something Gyrodec has simply evolved and remains the Gyro.

They're probably both pretty good tables and, because of normal retail channels will both be at price disadvantages in the other's home territory once they make their respective way across the ocean.

Well Tempered Amadeus is also at around this price point. Nice reviews at 6moons and elsewhere. Worth checking out as well? There is a Well Tempered Circle here on AC.

Haven't heard any of the mentioned TTs, but thought I'd point out another contender that it seems shouldn't be overlooked.
