You can pick up Snow Leopard for $30.   That might actually improve your wireless issue, regain diskspace and a performance bump.

My operating system cannot support it; 10.5 or 10.6 is required and I have 10.4. I guess I'll just have to be patient. :?

Upgrade your OS, perhaps.  I think Pure Music was some of the best audio dollars that I have spent.  I have been using a John Kenny modified HiFace, which lowers the floor noise considerable, with great results.

I have a similar problem, an old G4 (750MHz, 768Mb ram, 40 Gb hd, 300 Gb ext HD) that currently works OK to stream (via eternet) music to a Squeezebox Touch and movies to a BD player.  The music sounds very good and the movies good enough, but the computer is very slow and any incidental use of the comuter can lead to rebuffering on the Touch.  It's time for an upgrade, I think.

My priorities are:
  • music.  I mostly stream AIFF 16-bit 44.1kHz, but am downloading more good high-resolution music.
  • a reasonably quiet system.  The computer is in the listening room about 20 feet away from the listening position, so the comuter and HD don't need to be absolutely silent but must not be noisy.  Is the mac mini generally quieter than the iMac?
  • streaming movies.  I like movies, but I love music.

I have done a lot of tweaking in my audio adventures, but my current workload makes it very difficult to do much fiddling around.  I need to buy something, hook it up, and turn on the music... that's all I currently have time for.

What do you guys suggest?

Many thanks,
Pete

I think you would be very happy with a mini. I use one as a music server, and it is very quiet. It will integrate easily with a monitor or flatscreen, or you can operate it headless. There are affordable options for storing and playing high resolution files as well.
