My first NuForce. can you help?
« on: 20 Dec 2010, 08:30 pm »
Hello everybody here and thanks for hosting my words....Just received today my first ever NuForce 8.02 mono's bought from another european country, so unheard.
Get off my famous Class A amp still with a skeptical attitude due to a known cynical review of someone that dismantled NuForce to show it made was made too cheap and was sounding as a cheap amp...

Guys I couldnt believe at the great sound these just arrived cold like hell (they were in my car at +2 grades only). They immediatly gave a sense of being there. I made several A/B's test and although difficult to do due to the time in plugging and deplugging I clearly see the NuForce great sound.
Particularly I found voice sibilants completely absent compared to a monster class A amp.
But now what I fully dislike are to things and I kindly ask you if this is normal.....A rantling bzz when powering on, that disappear after few secs and a big buuump when powering off the amps, both mono's.
I have very sensitive speakers around 97dB and this might be strong for this reason, but couldnt i damage them? Volume at zero of course....Is this normal due to the technology of Nuforce? how to avoid this? Thanx so much and hope I can have some words that make me continuing to keep them...Eventually if this is normal for NuForce, what about leaving them always on like my Spectral preamp is? pls remind me the consumption in this case.  BTW no manual from seller, can I buy one copy from anybody?

Sounds to me like they're broken.

So this has nothing to do with the amp behaviour? It seems othen amps gives out a bit of buump when switching off. Or NUForce shoudl be 100% exempt of this?

I leave my pre and power amp on all the time - unless going away for extended period ... they are always ready to play and perform at their peak at each listening session ...

Amps with good stability don't make noises when you switch them off. Good amps also don't make rattling buzzes when turned on.

I don't know whether your amps are defective or if the design was, but in either case something is broken.

You should leave the amps on always unless a thunderstorm. The amps sound better and better as they are kept on i have had lots of experience with these amps and that is what i have found.   When you cut your amps off make sure u cut amps off first then up the chain.  When you cut them on MAKE SURE you cut the Pre Amp on FIRST then Cd Player then AMPS.  You cut them on back down the chain.   If you cut your amps on first after everything has been off you could have problems.  The amps do make a little buzz razzle when you first cut them off.  Hope this helps and enjoy.  As you move up in the Nuforce line their amps get better and better.

Firstly do not be too worried by the small turn on thump/buzz a lot of amps do this and the newer Nuforces are better. If it sounds great then I suspect it works properly. I can't, remotely, say it is not broken but my V1 made a funny noise when being turned on but caused no problems.

Do not worry too much about what some people are saying; listen, it is your amp and it is for you. If you think it sounds better than your BIG Class A amp then it probably does. Also if you leave it one for a day or two then you will hear it getting better. So there should be more to come.

I use 96db sensitive speakers and there is no problem; do not play a disco through them. More speakers are damaged with too low power amps than too powerful. Depending on your preamp you may find that a loud sound occurs low on the preamp control but if it works do not worry.
I do not know what power it consumes on idling but it is very very low; should be no problem.

Thanx George, it sounds as a relief. Well it is not that loud but my speakers uses the PHY single driver and it is quite a big cone. Although even with this NuForce bump it does not really move that much.

I think will probably leave them on all the time as my preamp (Spectral) is always on as well.
They were sold without power cord and might experience a bit there on the cheap as never wanted to spend a forune on power cords. I understood it should be shielded then...Maybe what I can do is to reduce the gain on the spectral preamp setting. Maybe this will decrease the bump, although does not seems logic to me.
IMHO.
Cheers

It's easy enough to check. Just turn the volume control on your preamp down all the way and see if the amp still thumps when turned off.

I suspect the problem is the amp, and would be surprised if it's the preamp.

Do what you want, but I was just pointing out that I would never use an amp that makes rattling buzzes and thumps. An amp shouldn't do these things, and your speakers are at risk. Make sure you use fuses to protect your speakers.

Did I read it correct that we are talking about Ref 8.02, the 1st mono amp that we made back in 2005? Ref 8.02 has been discontinued for nearly 5 years now. Wow!

But hey, we just announced a limited edition Ref 8V3.  Your Ref 8.02 can be upgraded to the 3rd generation amp technology. We have come a long way since 2005.

Yes it is. Correct ! Well, I always owned amps that even had 10 years. is it that strange that a well done amp like NF stands itw own and sound beautifull after years? Or are they like milk with expiring date? i am kidding of course. i think anybody here would like to hear that NF can pass the age of time easily. in fact how could all this class A amp survive then? They have terrible operational temps, and this should age them quicker?   In fact as soon as my financial engagements will enable will go for newer amp, probably a Nuforce then? Would it be worth to do the upgrade or better go for a 9 directly? Pls indicate the best price performance chance for me, thanx so much
