Oppo BDP-83SE versus 95 for 2 channel music only?
« on: 3 Feb 2011, 08:42 pm »
Hey all,

Any thoughts on which way to go? I've been hearing mixed reviews about the 95, though I don't know if that's just a fresh firmware  thing or not. I don't care about 3D video, just two channel music (CD, DVD-A, SACD, USB). Is it worth the premium versus buying a used SE? Any of you SE owners that have upgraded to the 95 please chime in.  Also, thoughts on SE+modWright versus 95 for music quality?

Thanks!

Hi,

I have a BD83SE and the analog section is wonderful. From what I read I really dont think its worth upgrading only for 2 channel audio, but if networking, 3d, esata etc are important to you and you dont really have anything now, sure go for it.

I like these things and would buy one but need to sell my 83se to help close the gap. The esata to me is good for my particular situtation.

The Oppo Digital website shows the BDP-83 as discontinued & the BDP-83SE as production being ceased.

I have a BDP-83SE & love it for upconverting DVD, blu-ray & particularly 2 channel.

I have since got a Virtue Audio Piano CD player w/ a Tube buffer Sensation M451 integrated amp (combination components, went for the eye candy).

Both sound excellent, but I do have redundancy 2 channel-wise, so I could get a used BDP-83 at some point.

Drop me a pm if you are interested in a little over a 1 yr. old BDP-83 w/ SE upgrade.

The 95 is only available to the few early release customers so you will likely not get much feedback until the March 4th release date.  The early folks on AVS are saying it sounds good, but needs break in (duh!) and one says it's bot as good as his Benchmark DAC (yikes, I am NOT a fan of that DAC).

Hello Ted,

Thanks so much for the feedback. I appreciate your advice but I guess I'm trying to be ahead of the curve so to speak in case feedback for two channel performance of the 95 isn't as good and the SE prices go back up. :)

FYI I agree with you; I don't love the sound of the Benchmark either! I actually had one for a bit and ended up sticking my CAL Alpha back into the system.

Best,
