Where to put the center channel speaker?
« on: 20 Dec 2010, 03:18 pm »
Danny and friends,

I have a lot of flexabilty in where to mount my center channel speaker.  I have 4 basic options that I would like some input on:

1. Above the screent mounted to the screen box in verticle or horizontal orientation.

2. Below the screen mounted to the screen box in verticale or horizontal orientation

3. On my front rack in a verticle or horizontal orientation.  I am a little worried about having a speaker on the same stand as my tube amp, is that a real worry?

4  On a stand in front of the rack in a verticle or horizontal orientation.  Doesn't look that great and will suffer some WAF loss.  Probably my least favored option.

I tend to think that a verticle orientation is better and that because of the baffle step loss built into the crossover it's better to be out in the room, but honestly I don't know if having it physically close to the screen also has merit.

As always I really appreciate your time and knowlege on these questions.

Here are two pictures for reference.

Thanks,
Robert

The vertical orientation will give you the best off axis response. However, I don't see you being more then 15 degrees off axis in that room so it really won't matter. You can turn it either way. So long as you are right in front of it then it will sound pretty much the same.

Working with what Danny said, if you go horizontal, you'll be able to raise the center higher so all the frontline drivers will all better line up with each other. That's ideal for HT movies in situations when there's side to side action, the soundtrack will sound seemless and it'll make it that much harder to pick out the center speaker. My center drivers sit about a foot lower than my mains drivers and it is far from seamless for me but there's not much I can do about it.

Cheers,
Robin

Robin,

Thanks for the advice.  I think I am going to mount it to the bottom of the screen box horrizontally.  Considering what you are saying you can see in the picture they will be very close to being the same height.

Kind Regards,
Robert
