AVA in the North Cascades
« on: 20 Nov 2010, 02:11 pm »
Near the end of summer my wife Sheila and I spent a week at an amazing mountain community in the North Cascades in Washington. I'm sharing this here 'cuz you guys are my "home group".
There are no roads into Stehekin. Most folks take a ferry up 50 mile long Lake Chelan. Mostly just a mile wide with the mountains coming down to the shoreline.

And some folks come by seaplane-

We stayed at a ranch 9 miles up the valley from the head of Lake Chelan. Heres our cabin and the cook house.

Playing at the Stehekin river across from the ranch

An amazing hike to Agnes Gorge-

A horseback ride up the mountain to Coon Lake-

And a neighbor-

Met many wonderful folks, Karl has "the Garden".

About the Garden
by Karl Gaskill

I first came to the Stehekin Valley via the pacific crest trail in 1975 and fell in love with it and the Paysaten wilderness area to the North I had just hiked through.

I purchased my property in 1979, six acres with an acre organic garden. I met my wife in the garden the previous year. Together we originated and operated the Honey Bear Bakery on our property, expanded the garden into a commercial venture, established bees for honey production and goats for cheese making and manure for the garden, and created a working self sufficient homestead.

Quite a guy and the veggies and cheese were excellent.

We were going to try and hook up with one of our buddies from here, "ArthurDent", but it didn't work out. We're already booked for next year and we WILL hook-up with JD!!

Catch you all later 8)

It must be nice to be retired. But how many of those AVA t-shirt do you have, or is it the same one?

Retired!  :rotflmao: I wish, far from it. Hope I'm able to voluntarily retire in another 10 years.
I made up 4 shirts. Sent one to Frank(before I met him, he gave it to "one of his girls", it didn't quite fit, too baggy on him.), gave one to my brother, and I kept two. Those are the two in the pics.
That's the same question folks used to ask Jerry Garcia about his black T.  8)

Nice pics marty. Some special country around here, everything from the rainforest to the desert, with lots 'o mountains to spare. Looking forward to making the connection next year, and meeting you & Sheila.

For me retired will mean going down to Les Schwab for a new set of radials.

Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed the photos!

I spend time in the mountains of North Carolina but they are not like these!
I grew up as a Boy Scout in upstate New York and camped, hiked , canoed in the Adirondacks and in the Green Mountains of Vermont.

The area looks really pristine and the water in the river is really beautiful, I'll bet it was a bit on the cool side!!

Thanks Again!
All the best

Looks like you had a great time!

Growing up in WA, I have a lot of wonderful memories from time spent in the North Cascades, and the mountain range is one of my favorites.
