Mono recordings on vinyl.
« on: 22 Nov 2010, 09:20 am »
G'day all, I was listening to an Australian mono pop compilation from around 1967 on stereo headphones today, and I was amazed by how good it sounded, punchy and really quite dynamic.

I was using my usual Ham Radio shack system, using a 'standard' Shure M97xE wired for stereo and loaded at my preferred 62 k.

I hear a lot about purpose designed cartridges for mono regardless though, things sounded great this morning on my usual set up.  Any comments on preferred set ups for mono?  Regards, Felix.

I don't have enough mono to justify a separate setup. I have two stereo rigs and don't have the shelf space. But I haven't had an opportunity to hear mono-a-mono either!

Maybe Wayner and the Seven Tables...

Ten. I'm just not that interested in mono pressings, tho at one time I had the history of WWII on 33s called "Sea Fights and Shipwrecks" that was very interesting. I also had a record that had eathquakes and Ionic storms, but that is gone too.

I do have the Bob Dylan Highway 101 Revisited in mono and a I thought my 1812 Overture (with canon) was mono, but I'm too lazy to get up and go look for it.

I did convert some 1940s stuff to CD for a friend, all older comics like Bennie Goodman, Abbott and Costello and some guys like that. That was pretty interesting. I suppose if I came across some stuff like that, I'd buy it.

I am a huge mono fan.  I have a separate tonearm and Miyajima Premium BE cartridge dedicated for mono.  If you haven't heard your mono LPs on a dedicated mono system, you are missing a real sonic treat.  There is something 'right' about mono done well.  Best of all, mono recordings can often be purchased on the cheap compared to their stereo counterparts.  I own ~170 jazz/pop and ~160 classical LPs and buying more all the time.
