AV123 LS6/LS9 Dampening Material
« on: 1 Feb 2011, 10:33 pm »
I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of dampening material MLS used in his versions of the LS6 and LS9 speakers?

I heard a pair that came straight from AV123, and thought they sounded pretty good, so I'm wondering if I can do something similar to save a $$ on my LS6 build (vs. using No Rez).

I read in another forum that vinyl tiles and foam can come close to similar performance of No Rez, but I'm not sure I want to try to shlack on glue and tiles throughout my LS6 cabinet.

Hey Freerider,

They used a few different materials in the LS's. I believe the first ones shipped were lined with No Rez. I've personally seen them lined in 1/8" asphalt roofing with a piece of 3/4" foam glued on top of the asphalt, 1/16" roofing with a piece of 3/4" foam glued on top and 1/8" asphalt with a full lining of "egg crate" acoustic foam.

Danny recommends the floor tiles and foam as an effective, lower cost (albeit much more labor intensive) alternative to No Rez.

Here's some mass loaded vinyl with PSA. 4.5'x 12" $9.25. Stick this to the walls and supplement it with foam, Dacron or something else.

Thanks for the advice!  That's a bunch of good alternatives.  I have to admit I'm a bit partial to the mass loaded vinyl with PSA, as it looks cheap, acoustically designed, and comes with adhesive backing.

68" H x 16.5" D x 12.375" W => 3060 sq in
Looks like I would need 9 or 10 sheets to cover the 3 internal walls of both the LS6s.  That's over $90 without tax and shipping.

or...1 case of the adhesive vinyl tile from Home Depot for $32.

That's a tough call.

Then I'd need some 1" foam on top of that, and some insulation to fill in from the back wall to the port openings.  Not sure what foam would work best..

I was thinking of Natural Cotton Fiber Insulation for the backfill around the ports and in the tweeter box.
