upgrading from 5.1 system to 7.1 with Norh speakers
« on: 17 Feb 2004, 02:37 am »
I have five ceramic Norh 4.0 (plus an Adire Dharman sub) for my speakers.  They are powered by a Yamaha rx-v995 receiver that will be upgraded sometime soon.  I'll be getting a 7.1 receiver, maybe the Yamaha rx-v2400.  I'll need two new speakers for the 7.1 system.  I'm very happy with the 4.0, but wouldn't mind something that sounds "bigger/fuller."  If I stick with Norh should I just buy two more 4.0 or should I get a pair of sm 5.1 to use as my mains and move the 4.0 to the rear?  Would the 5.1 match well with the 4.0 center?  Would I gain anything with 5.1 since I have a sub anyway?  What about sm 6.1?  I gotta think they would overpower the 4.0 center and make it sound small.  I need something that sounds big, matches the 4.0 center, and is easily powered by a receiver.  If I don't stick with Norh I'd be buying two new fronts plus a center and use all Norh 4.0 for rears.  Does anything match well like this?  I'd love to have towers as fronts, but I fear haveing one brand up front and Norh in the back might not be a good idea.  Thanks for any ideas.  Let me know if you see any used Norh 4.0, 5.1, or 6.1 for sale.  Is there ever any B stock at Norh?
Thanks,
Satch

Get the 6.9's if possible...they rock, and will sound well with your 4.0's

Another pair of 4.0s!  The 4.0's are the only speaker I have ever regretted selling.  They are very good for the $$.  Rather than bigger speakers, why not get a couple of extra subs?  Put a pair of Rava's and an external electronic crossover close to the 4.0's and set it up as a "full range" speaker, with the 4.0's handing off to the Rava's at 150 or 200 hz.  Then you can run your front speakers "full range" off the receiver, and use the Dharman as the .1 of your setup, and route all bass there.  Now you have full range sound, and cleaner mids (due to the 5 inch woofer not having to produce any bass at all).
