TRANSFORMER THOUGHTS
« on: 31 Oct 2010, 12:38 am »
hey gang, as a part of my ongoing diy edumacation, i am starting to look at transformers for my projects. my initial research is showing me that toroids may not be the best option. . i am very concerned about noise because i live in an apartment so picking a good tranny is important until i can find some diy options out there. any recommendations on companies and sites to check out?

Hi there AUDFILE74

A lot will depend on what type of project you are looking at. For most tube projects, you can find what you need from either Hammond or Edcor.

I have built many designs using Toroidal trannies with no noise issues at all. I have switched since then though as I found a very good manufacturer that now builds all of our transformers.

The quality of the transformers used in both the power supply and/or outputs will have a great effect on the sonic quality, extension and noise.

Many Hammonds can be found at www.partsexpress.com and Edcor sells direct as well as through suppliers. www.edcorusa.com

So...what are you working on????

I am Getting ready to start building some solid state amps. i am also getting my hands on some tube amp kits as well. over time my goal is to build all of my own gear from source to speakers. so i really need to find a company that can do good transformers as awhole. i will have to look at the edcor link. that R.A. !

I too have been looking for transformers.  What I've learned is:

* For solid state, the options are extremely limited in the US.  I've found nothing but toroids. R-core, C-core and EI core are available but principally for tube amps.  I've found none of these types specified for the power supply in a solid state amp.

* For toroids, Plitron has the best reputation for quality and low noise.  The drawback is price, upwards of $200+.  Antek is a Chinese supplier favored by many DIY'ers for decent quality and low price.  Hammond and Avel Lindberg are a step up in quality but more expensive.

* Example: Plitron low noise 500VA Is C$304.52 available in 10-15 business days
Plitron standard toroid same specs is C$136.67 available in 10    business days
Anatek with similar specs is: US$55.00 available now
Avel with similar specs is: US$86.16   available now
Hammond with similar specs is:  US$120.31  available now

Hope this helps.

I have used Antek and Avel with great satisfaction.  I do have one Antek that started to hum but its super soft and with the cover on you can't hear it.  I would not hesitate to buy more.  These are all SS projects.  I have an Edcor for my tube pre winter project that looks badass.
