open baffled again : looking for some advice
« on: 28 Oct 2010, 01:40 pm »
hello everybody,

i'm open baffeld again. I was waiting for my wood for my fe127e , it would become a planet10 fonken design.

i have already a fostex fe167e bob brines playing as main, with planet10 phase plugs and i have treated the cones...

anyway, i had the fe127e on hand,  and i thought well let's put them in a cardboard, well i must say, i like what i hear. i have been looking long time at open baffles but maybe now is the time.

so i'm looking for two systems.

1)an open baffle pc speaker setup.
2)an open baffle setup for my main rig

but a few questions arise:

1)if i start biamping them i will use a dec2496 but what about the volume controls, i know you can buy an upgrade too make this happen, but are there other solutions ?

2)i might go passive because of the ease of things, but the filter is as expensive as a dec2496; so that's maybe a reason to take the digital crossover road.

3) i have been looking at a few designs, like the MKJ design, with the alpha 15,
but what is at this time the best design in passive mode: an alpha with a fe108ez or a ff85k.....

4)i really like small baffles, not for the appearance but for the sound quality; but i suppose that i need to go active then.

what do you think guys; my wallet isn't super big, so i might start to buy and later on upgrade. so maybe 1 woofer and 1 fullranger per side,
thanks

There are generally two 'camps' when it comes to open baffle speakers. If you want small baffles, you will need a lot of EQ, and that pretty much requires good measurement equipment. So that's a pretty complex path. If you go down this route, most people seem to end up with digital crossovers and multiple amps.

The other option is to use larger baffles, where the response is more predictable, and you can get good results with following some of the recipes that are available online. One of the popular designs is to use a large woofer like the Eminence Alpha15A with a full-range driver. Since you already have a full-range driver, I think your plan of starting with this approach is a good one.
