Bought my first DAC!!
« on: 13 Jan 2011, 07:58 pm »
Yea, so I just bought a Maverick Audio Tube Magic D1 DAC
I am SUPER EXCITED

I have 2 needs, and I haven't figured out where it will be most useful
1) In my home system, between the SB3 and my amp, or
2) in the office, as a USB DAC between my PC and (yet to be purchased) headphones.

We will see. Thinking of Grado SR for office phones, by the way. 60/80/125 or something.

I bought the updated tube option. (I chickened out at the thought of tuberolling myself)
Break-in period still going on I think. I have probably about 40 hours on it, mostly sitting in the background playing Pandora from SB3 while I'm working.
The only initial impression I have is that it makes listening to my Dynaudio Audience 72 through my recycled Sony receiver much more enjoyable than using the built-in DAC in the Sony receiver. Half a compliment, I know...
Comparisons between the SB3 (completely stock) builtin dac using analog out, and the Maverick haven't started yet.
I "think" it has deeper bass and softer highs, but that has not been a/b verified.
I will when I get a quiet moment around the house. IF the house is ever quiet, mind you.

Which headphones you have Knut?

You think grado's could be good for office use?

Congrats Knut,
I'm waiting on my DAC from Frank. I should have bought one years ago.
I've been using Grado SR60's for everything for a few years.
Sure an improvement on the old Koss brick on each ear that I used in the 70's.

Bought some Grado Sr225i
They are almost too nice to bring to the office, where I'm surrounded by non-believers...
Never realized how much noise gets out from them, and how easily they let noise IN. So, they may not be SUPER GREAT for the office... in hindsight.
My 10 year old Sony noise-canceling ones may end up in the office, instead.
