Debugging problems with Linn 5140 speakers
« on: 9 Jan 2019, 01:16 pm »
Hi All,

I have two Linn 5140 speakers, which I've had for many years.  I use them currently for our (one and only) TV, for TV, movie watching, music playing.  These act as both left/right speakers and the center channel.  These are run by a receiver.  I noticed that the left speaker had lower output.  That is, you could hear more output from the right speaker and less from the left speaker, but the left speaker does produce output.

So, I swapped left and right speakers and went through a configuration algorithm using the receiver (Audessey or however you spell it), and I noted at the time that the now right ("bad") speaker seemed to have lower output during the configuration.  However, the configuration algorithm gave no errors, so I thought the problem was fixed.

After listening for a while, I realized the problem is not fixed.  If you walk up to the speakers while they are playing normal TV (no panning), the "bad" speaker still produces lower output.

How do I debug this?  These are three way speakers (three drivers) with an internal, passive crossover.  Could it be one driver that's bad?  If so, could I run sweeps in frequency to find this?  (Or if I do this and there is an issue, is it driver or crossover related?)  Could I run white noise through them and see if I can find a driver or frequency range that's bad?

Thanks for the help.

PS -- I have Salk HT3s and a matching center channel with which I'm going to replace the Linns.
