Welcome, Lensman!
We have some great folks here in NC.  I just hosted a gathering at my place this past weekend and I think people are getting interested in hosting future events.  So, feel free to chime in to the other threads about monthly gatherings and such.

If you want to compare your amp to something specific, feel free to ask if someone's got it.  I'd be more than happy to bring anything I have.

Welcome!

I really like Tom Hoffman at Advanced.  He's a cool guy!  I really wish I had tried to wire around the preamp stage in my Plinius before I got rid of it.  That was really the only reason I got rid of it.  I just wanted no gain in between my amps and my digital stage.

How are you liking it?

Hantra,
I noticed a huge improvement in air, depth, coherence and timbre by wiring the amp passive. I have, however, less bass, and have picked up some pot noise when adjusting the volume (I think I can eliminate that in the near future). for the music I listen to, it's a good trade-off. The amp sounds less hifi-ish, less electronic.

Hantra,

After you got rid of your Plinius,
did you buy something else, or are you still shopping? Have you (or any other NC Circle members)ever listened to/owned a Monarchy SM-70?

I've owned one (actually a pair at one point run as monoblocks).  It was 5 years ago or so, just when they were starting to gain favor in the audio press.  So I don't know how much that can be translated to current models.

Smooth sounding, especially if you kept to low watt usage (it ran out of steam quickly on speakers that were even moderately difficult to drive).  Didn't have great detail (kind of warm and fuzzy sounding in stock form), laid back sounding, which was good if you had a bright pair of speakers.  Bass was a little mushy with them and definitely lacked deliniation.  And that was in an absolutely perfect acoustic space.....hmmmmmm... man, I miss that listening room.....

It wasn't bad for the money at the time, but there is a lot of other stuff out there that I would take over it nowadays.  There were several people doing mods to the amp that supposedly greatly increased its performance.  Again, these thoughts were on the amp that I owned more than 5 years ago.  I think, if I remember correctly, that they did revisions in subsequent years.

Just my non-commercial opinion having owned the amp long before I ever started a business.  Take it for what it's worth.....

I am still shopping.  Right now I am listening to the Rowland 201's, and although I could have thrown them off my roof last night, right now they sound pretty darned good.

It's embarrassing, but. .  I had them out of phase.  Scott told me that Rowland was infamous for making pin 3 hot instead of the norm.  But I think I just FORGOT that.  And when I swapped speaker leads, it was a VERY marked improvement. . .

Hopefully I'll be listening to a Bel Canto this weekend. . .
