What's the difference ? ? ?
« on: 30 Sep 2010, 01:02 pm »
Hi Danny.
To perform well drivers for Open Baffle must have a hi QTS, more than .5 or closer to 1.0. Right or wrong ? (Your SW-12-16FR have QTS of .75)
What makes a driver suitable for Open Baffle application ?
I suspect the suspension of the cone, the surrounding, but maybe there is more to that ?
Why a SW-12B would not perform well in an Open Baffle ?
Would you please explain.
Your only drivers offering for Open Baffle is the SW-16FR or the drivers you use in the V-2, but I think those Eminence drivers you got only a limited quantity...

He has plenty of the emminence drivers and said he could get more. They are $75 each.

The cabinet becomes part of the suspension in a ported or sealed box. Depending on the Qts of the driver the box can be bigger or smaller to add the appropriate amount of loading to the cone.

A driver with a Qts of .7 or higher can rely only on the suspension alone (Qes and Qms) to keep control of the driver.

Of course if you then add servo control on top of that then you are really doing something.  :thumb

When something is very good at a very low price, the word :

Hi Danny and Audio Circle members.
If I understand well, the difference between a driver with a QTS of .7 and .35 is the suspension, the surround construction and/or stiffness ? ? ?
Therefore, if you go with a driver with a very low QTS in an Open Baffle set up, the driver will... Let's say :Will overtravel, the cone excursion will be too much).
Am I right ?

Note :
Sorry for being so ignorant, but I am trying to lear here, once I know, I will not ask again.

You got it Guy.
SORRYTO BE A PAIN IN THE NECK ! !
I read on different audio sites that many DIY us the Eminence Alpha 15A with a QTS of 1.26 would that be too much ?
I also saw somewhere else, that the ideal QTS for OB is around .5 ?
PLEASE COMMENT !

An ideal Q is .7.

Any larger is likely a result of a large gap around the voice coil (offering less strength and less control) or a really stiff suspension to limit travel and it can force the amp to have to work a little harder to really move it. It is the same effect of putting a woofer in way too small of a sealed box.

I answered another question that you e-mailed me but it keeps bouncing back to me. it is the same e-mail address that I have used for you many times so I have no idea what the problem is.
