Dear Aksa Community

I would be very interested to hear about the sonic qualities of this amp.  I have already built the 55 watt Nirvana and I am currently setting up my study as a listening room.  It is fairly small, approximately 4 x 5 metres, also I don't listen at high volume.

This has got me thinking about the lower power version of the Aksa.  I am also building the Aksonics.  Taking Hugh's advice I am trying to find a cabinet maker to cut the panels for me.  Of the four I have tried all have knocked it back saying they have a 3 to 6 months backlog of work!  

If anyone can advise of what the sonics would be like in this set up it would be much appreciated.

Hi, Ian,

I can't see why you want to build a 25w AKSA to power your AKSonics.  Do you use your 55w in another room?

A 25w AKSA is merely a 55w AKSA with lower power rails.  I have one in my (active) setup where it powers my Maggie ribbons - in an active setup, the tweeters just don't need more power than this and, for the ribbons, it's worth gaining the small increase in "fidelity" which Hugh says the 25w offers over the 55w.

But tri-amping is a specialised requirement - for your general application to power a set of full-range speakers, I would have thought a 55w AKSA would be more appropriate, as:
A) in the future, it gives you more options than the lower-powered amp would, and
B) for a full-range speaker, it gives you more "headroom" than a 25w would.

Well for tweeters with active cross overs that might do the "trick"

It would be nice to hear from those who have heard a 24 watt AKSA amp how much it sound more natural in comparision with for instance between an AKSA with or without the Nirwana upgrade.
Or relative to the difference between an Nirwana and Nirwanan+ update.

I have approximately the same size room, and I listen to a GK-1, 55N and Aksonics.  While I don't often turn the volume up very loud, I do find occasional recordings that require the volume up near 12 o'clock.  Also, the Aksonics can go surprisingly low, and on classical or acoustic jazz I'm glad for the extra power.

On the Aksonics you might try doing it yourself if you have the tools and inclination.  I cut everything with a circular saw (with a very good blade), and everything turned out OK.  (I did also need a router for the driver cuts...)

Thanks guys, it was more curiosity than anything else.  I may build a home theatre amp in the future by adding three more  55 watt amps.  Also if the 25 watt amp was siginificantly better I would consider it for the lsitening room.

I do have aTriton saw bench which I am currently assembling but I am having problems getting the saw alignment right and I want the Aksonics NOW.  Looks like I'll just have to be patient and cut the panels myself.  I bought extra sheets of particle board on special so I'm prepared to make a few mistakes while learning the art of machine sawing.

Hi Ian,

For full range on the AKSonics, which are 87dB/watt/metre, I would not recommend going to the 25W AKSA.  Maybe 40W, yes, but not 25W.  As Chris remarked, there are moments when the extra power is required, nice to know the grunt is there.

If the AKSonics were 94dB/watt/metre, then I'd say yes, go right ahead.

Now, on the cutting of the timber, you really need someone with woodwork skills.  My suggestion would be to look around your children's school staff/fathers/mothers, and enquire if anyone there is a competent carpenter and if so can you 'hire' them for half a day.  They might even have a better sawbench than a Triton, and you will have a point of common interest - your school and your children.

There is a huge wealth of talent in the general community you never find out about unless you ask.  Most people are delighted to speak if asked;  they seem pretty quiet until someone shows interest......

I am starting my Aksonics soon (I have been held up a bit on other things) and I have thoght about cutting the panels myself.  I have a work bench and access to a circular saw.  I have had success before with clamping a stright edge down and running the saw along this for a stright cut.

Have you tried Wood N You at Coopers Plains?  They have a workshop and equipment for hire.  I don't know the prces though.

Mr Ply&Wood will cut to your specs for a small fee. They only do parallel cuts. They do a great job.

As my job takes me from class to class as a teacher aide (I do all levels from year 1 through to Year 7) there must be one of the kids who has a Dad that does woodwork.  And you're right Hugh, I just have to ask.

Just the other day a kid approached me when he saw a bingle in the front panel of my car and told me that his Dad did panel beating.  And I quote "He'd give you a special price if I told him that you had helped me to learn to read".   Believe it or not I found the key to helping this kid  learn to read was so he could read the instructions on Playstation 2 games. He hasn't looked back since!  Part of his home work was to play on the Playstation 2! And it worked!

 I guess if he was a bit older, you could've given him old "Playboys" to read.  After all, everyone knows one used to buy it for the fabulous articles!
