Has anyone done this?

Do you recommending doing so?

If you're talking about this one:  http://www.bluraychip.dk/product.php?id_product=15

It doesn't look to hard. I haven't had a reason to pop the top on my 93 yet, so, I don't know what the cable, etc. look like.

Mike,

Exactly.

As noted in the link you provided, or another similar solution.

Some of the models are easier.  My old Oppo DV980H is in the secondary basement system and I made it region free via use of the below procedure:

As to the process of converting the Oppo to become a region free DVD player, its very easy and can be done in less than a minute. Then should you encounter DVDs with RCE, you use the same procedure to set the player back as a Region 1 DVD player.

"Q: What is Regional Coding enhancement(RCE)?
A: It's a digital enhancement added to some Warner Bros and Columbia DVDs to stop region 1 (R1) DVDs from playing on Region-free DVD players.

Q: What's the difference between Region Coding and RCE?
A: Regional Coding enhancement(RCE) is an additional layer of protection which some studios have placed on select REGION 1 DVDs to prevent them from playing on region-free or multi-region players."

This works on the 980 but I think I remember that on the newer versions (83 and newer) this functionality is no longer there and you need a hardware fix that Mike Nomad refers to above.  They say it is very easy but I've always had it done for me so sorry, can't tell you how easy it is (or not).

Cheers

David -as I noted - some of the models are easier.  The post previous to mine indicates Oppo did different things on later models.  On some limited number of (non-Oppo) players several years back I recall the way to make it region free was to play a Region Zero disc the first time the player was used (I think some Linn players may have had this option).  I used the Oppo DV980H in the secondary bedroom system since I got it upon its initial release and the last couple of years it has been for audio use as I had better video players in there.  I decided to move it to the secondary basement system where currently I have both a Samsung 2500 Blu-Ray player (which is also excellent on DVD) and a PS3.  I was using it to feed DSD over HDMI into my Onkyo 1000 receiver I picked up a few weeks back.  Someone gave me a Region 3 DVD and I decided to give it a shot and it was really simple.  It's too bad they eliminated this feature.

I have not tried this on the BDP-83 (and probably won't as mine is modded and used for audio and that's why I have secondary systems for those rare instances) for DVDs only but this is a supposed region hack -
