Castanet and hard to drive headphones.
« on: 7 Sep 2010, 05:50 pm »
I've recently build the Castanet and I love it with my Alessandro MS-1i, but I recently got my hands on two new headphones: the HifiMAN HE-5LE orthodynamic (low impedance and very low sensitivity: 38 Ohms, 87.5 dB) and the Beyer DT-770/600 ohm version. Both of these require that I turn the volume very high; in the case of the HE-5LE, I can comfrotably play it at maximum.

Is it possible to increase the gain on the Castanet?

I'd posted the same question to Jim.  He said "not with this design".

No, you can't really make it any louder.  However, I have to say, I LOVE cranking my CASTANET to 100%.  What the heck is wrong with that?  There is no clipping, hardly any distortion.  Just super dynamic crystal clear music with solid bass.

What exactly is the problem?

The Beyer sounds great, but I find the HE-5LE to be a bit too dark for my tastes. Now, reading around head-fi, I see that some prefer power amps for these and their successor, the HE-6 (for which Fang recommends a 5 to 30 WPC amp). Asking on the Bottlehead fprum (since I also have one of their amps), I found out that their S.E.X. kit has a 120 ohm resistor on the output, whose only reason to be their is to reduce the gain for low impedance 'phones, and they recommendd that I could remove it for these orthodynamics.

Since I don't own a S.E.X., I was hoping to try it, if it had been possible, on the Castanet to see if it had any effect on the sound quality.

By the way what are the differences between the low and high impedance headphone outs? They do seem to sound different, with the high impedance headphone out giving me more impacts, but sounding more compressed (less extension, less soundstage).

The HI and LO outputs are just different taps on the output transformer.

So that's 4 and 8 ohm output impedance, or more than that?

Something like that.  I forget the exact numbers.  Probably 5 and 9 ohms.

I think I may remove/jumper the volume control in my Castanet.
At 100%, the volume level is just barely shy of my preferred loudness.
Though there's good reason to believe my preferred loudness is TOO LOUD (lots of loud rock shows at small clubs).
That said, I'm happy with the Castanet's ability to drive my AKG K71s, and I think using the volume control on a pre-amp is a simpler alternative.
