Tube pre with true HT bypass search
« on: 18 Mar 2011, 01:25 pm »
Hi guys
I am on the hunt for a tube pre with true Home Theater bypass.I would prefer not to even have the pre on when watching movies.I know there are only a small few that do this but here is a list of what I am looking for in my pre.....
1  HT bypass(would prefer not to have pre on)
2  Minimum-2 sets of XLR inputs/outputs
3  Must be able to work well with big SS amps(Krell,ML,Classe,etc.)...I use a Krell 300s right now
4  Would prefer "Silver" colour not wire
5  phono option

I will ask you gentlemen with experience in tubes as I donnot have much experience here.I have read on a few with the bypass:
Cary SLP 05
VAC-?
I have tried a AR reference 2mk2 4yrs ago and honestly did not love it at all.I also tried a VAC Auricle and liked it which made me wonder about a little further up the chain(there is a VAC Renaissanse mk1 for sale locally)

So far I have leaned toward a Cary, but never heard one and not sure if it mates well with the Krell?
Any and all experiences would be appreciated.
thanks
john

You may want to consider the Modwright LS 36.5 which I believe meets most of your requirements.

There are a couple used ones available if the cost of a new one is out of your budget.

My wonderful Modwright 36.5 dual mono two box is going for $4k to AC members.  It's listed over at the classifieds (Trading Post Circle).  The HT bypass (a must in my system) works beautifully and defaults to HT bypass when powered off.  I am the sole owner (a long time Modwright beta tester and one of Dan's oldest customers).  It shows as Sale Pending, but is still available since buyer is having funding issues.  I include several rectifier tube sets and the wonderful 6H30DR super tubes for the signal side.  PM if interested.

Wow!  Talk about delivery on a silver platter, there's at least one option that fills the bill quite nicely.  Sorry I have no input for the OP of value as my HT setup is a separate entity from my two-channel music rig.

I purchased a new SLP-05 a few years back and was very underwhelmed with it.
