Track Splitting Software
« on: 19 Aug 2010, 06:46 pm »
I'm not sure if this is the appropriate circle for this, so if it needs to be moved, please do so.

I'm looking for a track splitting software to seperate tracks when I record vinyl. Not happy with what I am using now, and so far I am not having much luck finding something else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
JCarney

If you're on a PC, there is Audacity that is a free software. On a Mac, you can use Wavelab or even Garageband.

But he's looking to record vinyl with track splitting software to save some time.

What are you using now?

I haven't used it, but Spin It Again! seems to be a well regarded solution: http://www.bestshareware.net/spinitagain.htm

My personal experience with other track splitting software is that it works pretty well on pop/rock and jazz, but not with classical, as you often don't have the typical 2 second gap (or none at all) between "tracks" in a classical piece.

I have used spin it again, but it's been awhile. They may have updated it. It worked sometimes but not consitantly.

Looking for a program that can take an album recording and split the tracks while removing the space between the tracks automaticallly. The other problem I have run into is all the programs I have tried are unable to handle the 32/192 format.

Thanks,
JCarney

I've used Diamond Cut pro in the past and it didn't always get the split in the correct place. Pieces with really quiet parts would be cut at the wrong spot or too much surface noise would prevent cuts. These days I record the whole thing as one big wave with Audacity and split them manually. It's not hard, goes fairly quick and I know the tracks will be right.

I am pretty sure it uses 32bit math internally for all the editing.

I second Audacity for simple track splitting. I've used it on mac with .aif files. it works with most major file types.

The waveform clearly will show the song break. It's very simple to use: Drag to select content, then either cut and paste or use Trim. Then save. And it's free. Can't hurt to give it a try.
Available for Win/Mac/Linux. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

I've found none of the automatic splitters seem very reliable. Audacity works, but a little slow and clunky for just track splitting. I use an app called CD Wave Editor. It's the fastest and easiest manual track splitter out there. There's a wide and closeup view of the waveform of your recording. You can click anywhere on either one to start play from that point. You simply hit a "split" button at all the points you want splits while listening and then select "save" when you're done and all your tracks will be saved to the location specified.  It can also auto split with silence detection.
