Wireless networking and parental controls
« on: 17 Feb 2004, 08:38 pm »
Hi guys,
As kinda part of my PC upgrade, I am going to get a cable modem (can't get DSL, too far from a station).

I want to implement a wireless network, for my two kids PC's.
Also want some kind of "nanny" program to make sure they go to "good" sites.

Any suggestions?

TIA,
Randy

Hi F-100

Thanks for the links.
I am checking them out.
I also found this link
http://internetfilterreview.com/
has reviews for kiddie filters
PCMag had some reviews.
They liked a product called kid defender because it lets you monitor activity real time, from any PC on the net.  Might try that one.

Any input on wireless networking?
Am thinking about the Dlink DI-624 or the Netgear WGR614

I'm currently using the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router and Wireless-G Notebook adapter. I have to say that the signal quality is somewhat a little bit dissapointed. The shape of your house, layout of the rooms, and insulation material used may have an adverse impact on signal quality. My suggestion is to buy these equipments locally from Fry's or Best Buy, instead of on-line, and try it out.

Hi,
I ended up buying the dlink DI-624 router and the DWL-G520 wireless PCI adaptors.

I also just got a cable modem  :D .  Had dial up, and cable is SO much faster.

Anyway, the cable modem goes to my 624.  624 is wired into my PC's ethernet port.  Then, I put the 520's in my two daughter's PC's, so now they both have the internet too.

Wireless is running at 54mbps, but there is a firmware upgrade to go to 108mbps.  But, 54 is plenty fast enough, surfing is just as fast on their PC's as it is on mine.

Setup was pretty easy.  For some reason, did not work right the first time when I hooked it up through to my ethernet port, but I tried again, and it worked fine.  Also, a couple times now, I had to reboot my PC to surf, not sure why.  I actually have less trouble with the PC's that are wireless.  Setup was pretty easy, and they have no problems.

I am also trying a free version of parental SW.  Kiddefender lite.
