This is just SICK!!!!
« on: 9 Aug 2010, 05:05 pm »
I love movies..was a film major until drumming got in the way..so I have been on a quest for an awesome 5.1 surround sound setup. Today I have JBL-4312A's for Front mains, JBL-4311B's for Surrounds, an Energy CC-5 for a center and a POLK PSW-10 Sub. I lucked into ownership of probably the finest speakers JBL ever made and this just sounds as my kids would say-"SICK!" Just thought I'd share that!!!

Just for kicks I connected everything to a Sony AV receiver(STR-DH800) I have, and let the receiver do its calibration thing just to hear what it would sound like!! This receiver is supposedly 100W X 7 but it doesn't sound like it, sounds more like 20W-maybe!! Fun to hear movies with all the effects and everything coming from one source, I'll be going back to my original configuration with the TWO.2 driving the
mains and letting the Sony fill in the surround duties for movies though...I can hear how the Sony is so underpowered compared to the Virtue piece but I had to try it out. The fact that my PS3 can output multiple audio signals allows for the use of two amps, a very nifty feature I think!!!  :thumb:
 JRace- I'll reword that..they are the finest I'll ever own.. I have had a bunch L26's, L36's, L20T's, E80's, some other little ones I can't remember.
Thanks for the pic, my latest ones were painted textured white and I'm going to refinish them in Black like the pic you found-that iced it!!

Yes, unfortunately not much chance of finding these at a yard sale, or having a benevolent AC member contacting you and saying "these are just taking up space in my garage"!

I'd love to hear those... I can only imagine the unfettered power and unconstrained dynamics.   :thumb:
I *JUST*  missed a pair of 4312B sold for $240. :(

Look at them, they look like a happy face!  I imagine after hearing them your face would look like that too.

eclein - can you discuss this multiple audio signals thing a little - in this thread or another? I have a PS3 and have underutilized it as a Blu-Ray player and especially as a music player...

The JBL Everest I'm seeing here look like a twin to the speakers JBL had at the Cal audio show. Great sound. Big. Rich. Detailed. I remember the Klipsch speakers that looked about the same. Awful sounding. Very bright and sharp.

                                          Cheers

I have a PS3 slim 120 GB but I think its possible on all the hardware versions...In "Settings" under "Sound Settings" set "Audio Multi-Output" to ON and you can listen via two different audio outputs-I use HDMI and toslink. Using this allows me to take audio via toslink to my DAC and hear it on my 2 channel rig-great for concert videos. If I want to watch a blu-ray movie or hear multi-channel, audio is also output over HDMI to my AV receiver which in my case is connected to surround speakers and a center channel (it fills in the blanks so to speak). I doubt this is technically a true 5.1 setup as the toslink audio is down mixed to 2 channels so my DAC can deal with it but it works fine. I also use my PS3 as a CD transport to my DAC via toslink and can still watch the visuals a PS3 allows via HDMI to my HDTV. In essence I have two setups sharing the same component at the same time with the PS3 allowing the multi audio outputs I can use both my 2 ch. rig(with its Tube-DAC) and AV receiver at the same time...
