Help for a blown Bryston
« on: 9 Aug 2010, 07:47 pm »
I am writing on behalf of a friend in Italy that has a 4BSST2 (on my recommendation no less).

His area is prone to thunder storms, and twice now the amplifier is damaged in a way that prevents it from starting. I would not be writing you on this matter if it wasn't the ONLY thing that dies in the house. I mean, all sorts of delicate stuff is plugged in, to the same receptacle even,  and only the Bryston dies...something is odd here. In my experience, the Bryston is usually the LAST to go.

I don't trust his dealer right now, as he charges for each "repair" and wonder if there is anything you guys can recommend...yes, surge protector is on the list. But something is odd with the amp/dealer in my estimation.

Isn't there on-board filtering as a matter of course? I would love to be able to help the guy...

Maybe your friend should contact Bryston directly if he is not getting any satisfaction from the dealer. :dunno:

BTW,tell your friend to unplug his equipment during storms.A surge protector will not stop a direct hit from lightening.

Thanks for the quick response.

The Italy/Canada interface seems to be a bit broken, that is why I am asking here. For the moment, I am his way to Bryston.

If it had been something like a direct lightning strike, or even a near miss, I would not bother to write; all bets are off in such conditions. But, again, nothing else in the house seems to be the least bit fazed, even the things on the same receptacle.

We are not talking major damage, it seems it is just the soft-start that is failing. (Based on a description of the repair.)  I have owned Bryston in "surgy" environments before; as I said they were usually the last thing that went. Well, except for microwave ovens...they seem to be damned near lightning proof.
