Hello everyone! I've been getting quite a few emails recently asking if I'll ever design and run a production of high end audio components: i.e. preamplifiers, amplifiers, speakers, etc.

A lot of these projects are more of a hobby for me, as they would be incredibly complex and expensive to run as a production. If I make something, it's either the best there is, or I don't make it at all. However, I'm willing to take a chance to see what happens.

I've designed a very complex preamplifier circuit topology. It sounds incredible and specs the same. Because of the complexity of the circuit, in order to keep the cost down, I would have to start with the most basic of configuration: IEC socket, volume control (non remote), power switch, one pair of input RCAs (or XLRs) and one pair of output RCAs (XLRs). That's it!

The cost of the preamp will be $1800.00 all included. I would need to get at least 3 orders to make it worth while and move ahead with this project.

UPDATE:

For $2200 all included, it will have the following features in addition to everything above: Alps infrared remote control, 5 position input selector switch, LED power on indicator, and 5 RCA (or XLR, or a mix of the two) inputs.

Preliminary Specs:

- Mechanically Grounded Circuit Board/Power Supply.
- High Quality Components, i.e. Vishay Resistors, Alps Volume Pot, Vampire RCA Connectors, Teflon Silver
Plated Cabling, High Quality Circuit Board, Two Hammond Toroidal Transformers, Vishay/Philips/Nichicon
Capacitors, Military Dual Jfets (metal can type), Motorola Bipolar Resistors, etc.
- Frequency Response of +/- 3dB, 0 - 300+ kHz.
- Group Delay of < 1ms From 0 - 100+ kHz.
- Slew Rate of 20V/us.
- Rise Time of <700ns.
- Crosstalk >90dB Between Channels.
- Distortion, Dynamic and Static 0.003%.

Anyone interested?

Here are some prototype pics. The enclosure will be made out of thin black acrylic and aluminum panels, nothing fancy whatsoever.

OK.  So you're much further then an idea...

Why not offer the Alps remote option?  It's not that much more expensive and I think that you would get much more interest with that IMO.

Will it be powered via 120VAC or 12VDC?

It will definitely be powered by 120VAC. Sure, I can add remote and anything else, but the price will keep on increasing exponentially. Not sure many people will be interested at that point...

Exponentially?

OK.  The remote option probably wouldn't be more then $300 though.  Right?  If that even.  As long as you can offer it.

Maybe you should put a "menu" together so it can kind of be a build sheet with prices.  Just a thought.

Yes Steve.

Well, $300 to start with... Plus extra labor for me and I'm not cheap. So now it becomes a $2000+ preamp. Anything and everything is possible, it just comes at a price unfortunately. Here are other things that I can add on: balance control, selector switch, LED, phase switch, phono stage, Earth/ground posts, more RCA inputs, balanced inputs/outputs, etc.
