Spikes with the Song Towers?
« on: 10 Jun 2010, 10:01 pm »
Are the spikes on the STs fairly sharp or somewhat flat on the bottom? I am asking as I have soft pine floors and would not want sharp spikes digging into the floor. If the spikes are sharp are there any alternatives to them? I guess I could put small sections of rug down but would prefer not to.

The Songtower spikes are radiused, not sharp. However I still use brass discs to prevent leaving a dent over time in my wood floors. Pine, particularly, is rather soft and may be prone to dents. I could be paranoid for nothing!

tgp06 and Atlplasma,

Thanks for your thoughts :). I will most likely go with the discs or maybe have them machined down so they are not as sharp.

The Soundanchors are probably overkill for a speaker the weight of the STs with rounded spikes. Herbies offers a range of nice products that would work. There are also other smaller floor discs available (VTI, Adona, etc.) that are adequate for the STs. The Soundanchor spikes on their stands under my B&W 801 Series 2 are downright nasty!

i feel your pain bill...  i too have pine floors in my room, and there's little holes everywhere from where i've had speakers standing on spikes...

i bought some big flat gliders from herbie's for the soon to be born ht2-tl's...  primarily because i figure the speakers will be a LOT easier to move around if they are sitting on those...

I ended up buying these discs from a dealer on ebay. They look to be well built and seem to have a tapered opening which should accommdate the tapered SongTower spikes. Price is very fair and the dealer has a 100% rating.

Keep us posted on how you like them. I will be curious to see if they affect the sound of your STs. The price is certainly attractive.

I really do not think SQ will be effected and if it was I probably would not notice. The STs will be placed on soft pine floors so I do not want to mark up the floors. Plus more than likely I will need to move them around somewhat to get the best location (toe in/out and depth from the front wall). I had spike discs for my Outlaw LFM-Plus as well as with my present sub a Rythmik F12SE.

Setting a good sized sub or speaker on spike discs is a little bit of a challenge but I have it down to a system. Moving my subs around to get the best location would have been near impossible without the discs. Either that or I would have had drag marks gouged into the flooring :duh:.

You can purchase felt or foam pads to adhere to the bottom of the discs for further floor protection. The speakers slide much easier on the felt version for repositioning.

Forget the spikes at first. Place the speakers on cardstock - to slide them around - until you find the proper position, then put them on.

This is a little late for the original poster, but here is a close up photo of ST spikes.
