wall mounted speakers
« on: 2 May 2010, 05:48 am »
Hey Danny,
I know these are typically far from high-end Hi_Fi quality and tend to image really badly, but if someone was curious, is there a good way to modify any of ur kits to make them into some sort of slim-line wall mount type of speaker for use beside/ underneath wall mounted flat screen TV's and have them sound acceptable?
For example would the N2's work if they were made, say... tall and thin and if so, how deep might the enclosures end up being? (would the AV1RS mounting method be a good choice for this sort of speaker?)
Just wondering what u might suggest for this application?
Thanks Danny
Todd

So, seriously there are no good options for a slimer, wall mounted set up???  :(

Your best bet with these speakers would be to build the AV1-RS as designed and wall mount it.  In many ways, I think doing what you are thinking with the AV1-RS would still be better than 99% of the speakers out there.

It just doesn't seem like Danny has any desire to work on a wall mounted Neo1 or Neo1-RS.  It seems like he has a great unit in the AV1-RS and always recomends it for surround duties.

In these situations I think the best approach is follow Danny's lead.  :green:

I have had an idea for a while now that will take a wall mounted speaker to a level not yet achieved, but I will have to built one to test it and I just have not had time to get to it. It is a bit different and I really just don't want to let on about it yet or everybody would be doing it. It has to be tested mounted to a wall too and that has held it back some. Plus, it would really require a custom driver be made to really take it to it fullest and that could take some time too.

For now, the A/V-1RS is a great solution. It will give you accuracy plus a big non-localize sound field.

And I don't see gaining much in a design like this by going to the Neo tweeter.

The OP is looking for a L/R/C point source speaker not an omni-directional surround speaker.

Hey Danny, Have u been told lately that u can be a real tease when u want to!  : )
As an example, could u run an N1 in a box the same width, just deep enough to fit the magnet and as long as it takes to get the volume required without compromising sound quality too much (while we wait for ur designing)? I was thinking may be verticle for the side speakers with the port out the bottom and horizonatal for the centre (May be also with the port out the bottom (somewhere), may be with a seperate pod over the top of the woofer for the tweeters?
How would the av1rs sound as a front sound stage any way (fairly lacking in pinpoint placement, I would guess)?

The reason the AV1-RS is a better choice is because the baffle step compensation has been designed to work on a wall.  If you take the Neo-1 and put it on a wall the baffle step compensation built into the crossover isn't going to give you a good response.  There have been people who built the AV1-RS and put them in the LR out of curiosity.  Maybe they can chime in with their results.

This is true. Doing that will require a complete redesign.

I have people running them as left and right mains in a home theater system. It will actually work really well in some applications.

If someone is really interested in building something really "off the wall" then give me a call. Maybe someone building the test boxes that I need is just the push needed to get that revolutionary on wall project off the ground.

This could be a win/win for everyone. My brother who happens to be a cabinet maker by trade has asked me for some ideas for subtle (read high WAF) home theatre speakers for a 5.1 setup . He already has the Zu Druids in a 2.1. On wall would be just what he is looking for. We also happen to be local in the DFW area (Fort Worth) AND we will probably be at the LSAF coming up in a couple of weeks. Maybe the stars will align and we can figure something out...

Regards, Daniel.

When I was breaking mine in I had my normal two channel signal going to them. They worked surprising well as mains, but with my acoustics you could tell that the sound was coming from "up there".

They are fabulous as surrounds.

I have people running them as left and right mains in a home theater system. It will actually work really well in some applications.

Howdy...........I built a pair of A/V-1 speakers a year ago to mount on the wall in my family room. This room has a very high WAF factor involved. When I finished the build I suggested that these would be ideal for the room and even offered to paint them wall colour to have them blend in.

This did not meet the necessary approval. So I started on a variation that might work, A/V-1mod. I kept the same width, made them taller but not as deep to keep the volume the same as designed. I also ported them out the front. I built them with a slight angle to match the tilt of our flat-panel TV.

I also thought if they wouldn't work here I could turn them over and use them as floor-standers in my audio room.
Here is a pic of the two designs.

Here they are mounted on the wall next to the TV. I got a thumbs-up from the room owner.

I since have made an A/V-3S centre channel as well to be located in the wall under the display.

This was modified as well to give clearance for the fireplace vent pipe.
Here is the finished 'approved' installation in the family room.
.
A framed grill cloth goes over the centre channel opening to finish off the installation.

There is a theater room downstairs and a large surround system upstairs in my NASCAR room, but it was really important that THIS room be done to fit the WAF, and I agree that it turned out quite nice. I'm going to be building some rear channels next, maybe 4 x A/V-1RS.....I wonder what they will look like when I'm done??

What does it sound like??  Quite good actually.
I got to listen to both designs in my audio room before I put them in place and I found the original designs were excellent.  I am still playing with port length as it is quite close to back wall of the box. I wondered if I should have ported them out the top? The modified design is superior to other more expensive box speakers I have had in the room. We sometimes watch TV movies in the family room and the sound is great. This room is also where we play music while we're busy around the house and they perform very well. I may have made a few sound compromises but overall these are working fantastic.
Danny's kits were a way for me to get the best sound and custom fit the box design to meet all the factors involved.
Now I have a couple of empty A/V-1 cabinets that I may have to fill with another kit for some other room in the house!
Thanx to PDR for his assistance with the A/V1mod build and convincing his mom-in-law these will work!!
