Need advice on 32" TV
« on: 12 Jul 2010, 06:38 pm »
Mrs Marbles and I would like to use the screened in porch more so we are going to get a TV for it.

This is not going to be for HT etc.., just casual viewing.

The size we are looking for is 32".  We have FIOS, but I only ordered the SD box, and not the HD one.

Which TV do you recommend and why.  No real budget at this point, OK $0 -$1000

Thanks

I am not sure anything SD would look good on an LCD/Plasma - you may get a few HD channels over the air or provided. Unless the TV does some digital correction like the Sony XBR TVs do (did). Many at that size will be 720p so aybe it wouldn't bee too bad. Samsung maybe.

Rob,

Why not get a HD box for the room?  Can't be that big a price difference...

If you get the HD box, you can really go with any 720p/1080i pr 1080p set out there with the budget you are talking about.  Any chance of narrowing down the budget to help guide suggestions?

Will there be lots of direct light on the screen?  How about viewing angles?

Both of these questions would influence my decision on whether to go LCD or plasma.

There will be no direct light as this will be pretty near the ceiling, but there will be lots of ambient light in the room.

It will need to have a pretty wide viewing angle as the seating is spread throughout the room.

I might upgrade the box at some point to HD.  I do intend to get at least a 720P set

Insignia is BBs "house" brand - make sure you buy that "insurance" they like to sell...I would rather go with a brand like Visio or whatever is on sale if you want the cheapest.

Here you go -

At 32" I don't think plasma is an option.

Samsung makes some nice 32" LCDs. Visio is also another good option, IMO.

Good point Dan.  You would need to jump up to 37" or 42" to go plasma.

If budget remains up to $1k I would get the Vizio RazorLED (http://www.vizio.com/flat-panel-hdtvs/m320nv.html).

I have seen the picture on this 32" tv and it is very sweet.

I really like the Sony Bravia KDL-32EX400 (1080p) I recently bought. Much better than the older 32" Samsung 720p I had for about three years. You can usually find one for under $500 although I haven't seen any deeply discounted from the $549.00 list price.
