How do I connect REL subs to 7s?
« on: 13 Jul 2010, 11:09 pm »
Can anyone tell me how to connect two REL Strata subs to two 7BSST2?  Each REL has the Neutrik Speakon cable with three wires, and each 7B has only the two speaker outputs. It has been easy to run one REL by splitting the wires between the amps, but now I will have two RELs.  Do I need to have a different Neutrik/cable made?  Thanks to all.

The 3 wires are for 2 positive connections and 1 negative.  Just connect the 2 positives to the positive terminal and the negative to the negative on each amp.  The Neutrik connection has 4 connectors and they put a jumper between the negative poles.  It avoids a loose wire touching something by using all their wires.  I have custom made cables on each of my 4 Rels.

Thanks, Phil.  What if I want to continue using the banana plugs, though?  I don't like to corrupt my spade connections with extra pieces.  Is there a way to wire only a postive and a negative from the Neutrik?

When using a single sub, the REL Speakon wiring attempts to sum the L and R channels to that sub.  If your intent is to have a L channel sub and a R channel sub, I would think you could just leave one of the two positive wires from each sub not connected.

You can do that as well.  When my friend worked at the high end shop, I set up several dozen Rels.  I'd just be concerned if someone was not careful with the extra wire.

I am not sure what you are asking?  Do you have both your speaker wire and the wire from the Rel (Neutrik connector) into the same banana plug?  The custom wires I made up from the Rels have spade connectors and then I have my speaker wire going into the back of the 14BSST via locking bananas.  I actually just use 4 conductor wire with the Neutrik Speakon connector on my left and right sub.  As noted in the other posts the Neutrik is a 4-pole connector with 2 positives and 2 negatives.  As long as you connect positive to positive and negative to negative you're OK.  If you want to connect one positive and one negative that's OK.  I'd recommend putting electrical tape over the positive not being used.  It's cheap and extra insurance to make sure someone doesn't try to connect it if the wires get disconnected for any reason.

Hi Phil--I have spades on my main speaker cables top-loaded into the Bryston posts, and I have been plugging those small, stock Neutrik bananas into the back of the Bryston posts.  They  fit in just deep enough to hold, so it is a clean arrangement.  I would rather reconfigure a neutrik connector with better wire that would have only the (+) and (-) bananas.  Can you describe how I would use the four poles in the Neutrik connector to come out with only the two wires to each amp?

So you already have three bananas with the cables from the sub, 2 positives and 1 negative going to the amps?  If so, just don't use the extra positive
