Wasn't sure if I should put this in The Cinema circle or here, but since it's about food, I thought this would be a good place.

I have been working on a food-related web business and came across this movie...pretty eye-opening stuff (not in a shocking way, but a very intelligent presentation).  Definitely want to buy organic and local as much as possible...

Given the talk in the Supermarket produce pricing thread, thought I'd bump this up...a lot of the issues being talked about regarding grass-fed v.s grain-fed beef, organic vs. not, etc are addressed in this film...

Good film IMO... if you can call something like this good.

"not in a shocking way"

Among other things I was shocked that big brand chicken is bleached.

Thanks for mentioning this film Phil.

This was an eye opener for me   :o

Not sure if I am glad I watched it or not.  I really thought it was well done and very powerful.

It's truly an excellent film, and should be required viewing for anyone with even a passing interest in living a healthy and sustainable existence.

If you like this movie you should read "The Omnivores Dilemia" and "In Defense of Food".  Both are good books with great ideas.  Eating locally is really not that hard and can prevent so many issues.  Plus you can know who grew your food!!  I do both a meat and a veggie CSA and it is super to have a relationship with the farmers.

Definitely the film presents a lot of information that is "shocking"...but what I meant was that the film didn't rely on using any kind of "shock tactics" to get its point across (ie. it didn't try to really manipulate your emotions by using shocking images or anything like that)...it basically relies on the facts themselves to get points across.

One thing that definitely opened my eyes was some of the talk about the use of ammonia and other deadly chemicals in processing the food.  In the past, reading things about tainted food from other countries that would cite these kinds of chemicals being found in those food shipments I would scratch my head and wonder "what the heck was anyone thinking about putting ammonia in that?"  But now it dawns on me that perhaps some of the big US food companies are implementing their methods to developing countries, and those instances of tainted food are simply a result of a "glitch" at a processing plant (rather than someone being completely ignorant and putting toxic chemicals in the food for no apparent reason).

I was honestly not aware that some farms crushed pigs like that in a press.
