Custom Songcenter
« on: 8 Apr 2010, 04:23 pm »
Jim is building me a custom Songcenter and was a pleasure to work with over emails. Dimensions are 7 & 3/4"H x 23"W, front ported, RT upgrade. The reason for this is my entertainment system was built with a smaller center channel area than the  Salk speaker. He also is building me a custom grille for the front at 8"H x 25 & 1/2"W. This way, the speaker will be fully enclosed with the grille fully covering the speaker entrance.

I will be sure to post pictures of how it looks and also report back to how much better it surely will sound.

Currently I have a Def Tech C/L/R 2002 for the center which will be replaced. Mains are BP7006's and surrounds are BP2X's. The MFW-15 provides the boom boom. I have an Integra 70.1 receiver and a xpa-5 driving the 5.0 setup.

My goal is to eventually upgrade all to the Songtower series. The reason I am doing center first is I have not been overly impressed with the current one, the 2002. Since I watch a lot of blue-ray movies, and most of the sound is delivered through the center, I thought it made sense to upgrade it first. The BP7006's are much better speakers to me than the center, but will still be replaced eventually.

Any-way's, just wanted to share my Salk buying experience with you guys so far and I cant wait to see how this all works out.

What veneer did you chose?

Thank you for serving our country!

I chose curly walnut. To be perfectly honest though Nuance, I wanted the color you got for your Songtowers. I think the color is Icy-Rosewood? However, I never asked Jim about that color since I also liked curly walnut. I assumed it was some custom color you found someplace that might not be re-producible.

I forgot to ask this question as well. Does anyone have any pictures of a front ported song-center? And, has anyone ever heard one or ever seen a review? I don't think I have ever read anything about that version other than that it is available on the Salk website.

I have a custom songcenter in cherry - cherry front baffle and front ported (for the same reason you are seeking).
I haven't installed it in the cabinet yet, but I'll post a pic soon for you. Unforunately, I haven't hooked it up to listen yet, but it matches my cabinets and songtowers perfectly.
It's gorgeous, especially with the cherry front. You won't regret your decision.

Hello!

I have a front ported salk songcenter that is installed in a av cabinet and I think is sounds great! After explaining to Jim how my av cabinet is enclosed with no opening in the back he felt like a custom front ported song center would be a good choice. I highly recommend it!

Awesome guys. Thanks for the feedback and pics of the front-ported version. I will definitely upload pictures once I get home and get it all set up.

Here is the final product. I have been busy since I got back! My two new toys were the Integra 70.1 to replace my Sony STR-DA2400ES and the Salk songcenter. The speaker fits perfectly into the opening. I was also able to slightly angle it up toward the listening position, which is what I wanted as well. The grille looks awsome and covers the entire "speaker hole".

Other gear is a Moho MFW-15 and the Def Tech BP 7006's.

I think this is a good example of how "custom" Jim and his team can make the speakers I am extremely happy and can't wait to eventually upgrade to the songtowers as well.
