Question for James Tanner: B28B-SST2 and Torus
« on: 7 Jul 2010, 01:28 pm »
When Larry Greenhill of Stereophile reviewed the Bryston 28B-SST back in January, 2008 he stated in his write-up that Bryston advised him to use the Plitron Power Isolation Unit, Torus.  He did use the Torus's RM20.
Question #1:  Is it absolutely necessary to use the Torus with the 28B-SST?
Question #2:  If an audiophile has a pair of the 28B-SST, does he/she need two Torus conditioners?  One for each monoblock?
Question #3:  If the audiophile has two separate 20 amp dedicated lines, one for each of the monoblocks, is it still advisable to use the Torus conditioners with the 28B-SST?

Please help.

Hi John,

The new 28B's (7B, 14Bs) have the Torus Power transformers built in so the Torus is not required for instantanious current draw.

The Torus will still provide noise reduction and surge protection if that is required.  Basically take the total amperage you need to run your gear and the Torus you need should be rated at about 2/3rds of that figure.

Hi John,

To support what James is saying with a real world example I have a pair of 7B's with the new Torus transformers.  I also have the Torus CS15.  When I installed it I plugged my CD, BP26 and both amps into it and was immediately taken by the improvements in imaging, sound stage and tonal qualities of solo vocals and piano (especially female vocals).  Upon further observation (listening with the 7's in and out nof the CS15) I discovered that these improvements were caused more by the connection of the source and preamp than by the 7's themselves.  I keep the 7's plugged in to the Torus for the surge protection, noise reduction from the wall and overall the sound is a bit better to me.  Certainly 2 dedicated 20 amp outlets would be just fine for the 28's if you chose to go that route.  If you do I would highly recommend the CS15 for your sources and preamp.

Regards,

Bill
