New Mini ordered. USB or Toslink for audio?
« on: 6 Jun 2010, 06:09 pm »
Hi folks

I just ordered a Mini and I would like opinions on using USB (through a Hagerman USB-spdif converter) versus Toslink from the MAC to my Behringer DEQ2496 DAC.  The 2496 has a few mods - new analog P/S and soon a new SE output stage. I am curently running a CD player into the AES/spdif on the Behringer and have used the Toslink with DVD players. CD only, no Hi Rez files yet.
Also, any advise on Toslink cables. Do those adapters for the mini toslink work OK or should I consider buying a new Toslink cable with the correct connectors? I have not used Toslink much - is it worth it for more expensive cables?

Thanks
Brian

It's relatively cheap to try both - and I would recommend doing so.   That said, I've AB'ed both my mini and my AppleTV with my Benchmark DAC and while both USB and toslink both sounded fine, the sound seemed somewhat better with the toslink.  As for the cost of the cables - no doubt USB is cheaper, but you can get -excellent- cables for < $40 (a lot less in some cases) that will do your system justice.  I've been quite pleased with the cables I've picked up from Bluejean - great materials, solid build, sane cost.
