I recently retired. I got money. I spent the money on a stereo that would be useful until i croak. (hopefully not croak for TWENTY YEARS.)
I have a local dealer for Bryston and Magnepan, I bought 3.6's. The 'classic' amp with the Maggies is Bryston. I was going to buy an Audio Research Ref 3 preamp used, but fate was unkind (actually the folks who controlled the money were really slow to cough it up... by then all the Ref 3's had been sold that were for sale from folks buying Ref 5's)
Anyway, I auditioned the Bryston 4B-sst2 and Magnepan 3.6's with Bryston stuff at my local dealer several times. When it came time to buy, I just went crazy and bought all Bryston electronics.
I found the Bryston DAC did not do anything extra for me, so i returned it, and went for a second 1.5 and THAT one turned out to be MUCH better sounding than the first one, and I eventually returned the first phono 1.5.
So now have Bryston 4B-SST2, BP26, Phono 1.5 along with a VAC Standard with ALL the digital stuff through the tubed VAC to 'fix' it before going to BP26. and my old pre, an Audio Research Sp-15 used just for phono (with Kuzma Stogi S and Dynavector 17D3) to Bryston. With a Rega P5/Benz Glider vis Bryston 1.5 phono.
================
The Bryston won out because I had a GOOD local dealer who carried Bryston
===============================================
who I have used for many many years, and felt he would still be around for awhile, unlike many other local dealers, who seem on the verge of default.
Also the twenty year warranty mattered.
========================
The no nonsense of Bryston appealed to me, while close to state of the art.
=============================================
(the AR REF3, phono 7 used would have been better, but also cost twice the price even used, with NO warranty..)
And I have to say the 1.5 phono I kept is specially good. It is a masterpiece. (the one I returned was good, no problem.. but just did not match the second one, which is particularly sweet sounding for unknown reasons.)
I run the analog stuff through a Furman REF20i conditioner. and the digital stuff via a Monster 700SS conditioner.
I play music at low levels only. I am living in an over 55 apt and do NOT intend to disturb my neighbors. So I had to find equipment that would be great without the high SPL. i think I have succeeded.
I have a Senn HD800 earphone and some nice headphone amps too.
I have 6,000 LPs, and 2,500 Cds. So I have enough music to last awhile. The Lps have been culled many times so only to good stuff is left. I have tossed at least 8,000 LPs out, and at least 1,200 CDs out also.
I just bought about 900 Rock CDs lately because I had stopped hearing new Rock music around 1987, when MTV stopped playing videos. So I decided I neded to 'catch up'. So using various sources I made lists and filled them with used CDs. (Used CDs are dirt cheap now..) So I have at least caught up to 2001 anyway.. I plan on a server for later stuff instead of Cds. But that is a future project.
Anyway, the Bryson won out because it's pretty good, has 20 year warranty, and a good local dealer.
