Cornet2 LED light question
« on: 31 May 2010, 02:48 pm »
I just finished my second Cornet2 (this one for my son). The first one (for me) acted exactly as the manual says; however, the second one seems perfect and the only issue is that the LED light goes from red to green very fast; ~4 seconds. It sounds fine and I actually measured the voltages on this second one and they all look good.

They both sound great and we love them.

Not a big deal, but as a near newbie, this one is bugging me.

Thanks -- David

I think you should check the C103 capacitor - it may have less capacitance.
Too low R107 (or too big or break connections of R108) may also cause the behaviour.

Too enormous response! Check the solder joints of the resistors first!

In all likelihood your Cornet2 is just fine. Different types of rectifier tubes affect how long the LED stays red. You must be using a directly heated tube. The Cornet2 was designed to use a Sovtek 5Y3, which is indirectly heated and has a slow warm up time. NOS 5Y3 have a fast warm up. You can also use a 5Y3GT, 5AR4, or a 5V4GA (my favorite).

What Wayne said. My Sylvania 5Y3 goes green in about 2 seconds, the Sovtek 4 or 5.

Indeed.  A "real" 5Y3 will light up very fast.  If you prefer slow, then use a 5AR4 or similar.
