N2X's with Vintage Marantz Receiver
« on: 4 May 2010, 04:57 pm »
Hey Guys!

I'm thinking of purchasing one of the 22xx series Marantz receivers.  Wanted one since I was in high school back in the 70's.

Has anyone heard these with the N2X speakers?   Impressions?

Thanks,

Roger

I have N2X's and tomorrow I have a Marantz 140 amp and Marantz 3200 preamp being delivered!  I will let you know how it sounds....I won't be able to hook it up until Friday.

Hey Guys!

Wanted to post a follow up.  Today I received a Marantz 2220B receiver that I bought on ebay.  The 2220B was produced in the mid 70's.

I hooked it up to my N2X's and all I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!   The 2220B is rated at only 20 wpc but with the volume knob at 9:00 the sound fills the room nicely!  I believe all those vintage Marantz receivers were very underrated power wise.

It is in near mint condition and I'm in audio heaven!!  The smooth sound of the N2X's, coupled with that famous Marantz "tube like" sound is a match made in heaven!!!!!!

I see a run on Marantz gear...ebay watch out!
Monkeypimp emailed me last week and was gushing over a similar setup.

I just got email confirmating my N3's are on the way, cant wait. Will drive them with a cheap China tube that seemed to have good reviews for the price. Yaqin MC10, with EL34 tubes.

As an owner of several vintage Marantz receivers (including your new 2220B), all I can say is that their power ratings are real. The new receivers may have little white lies on their true power output.

I'm glad you got the volume level you are looking for at the 9:00 o'clock position. The N2Xs must be rather efficient. I would not try to run 2 sets of speakers at the same time with the 2220B. I also have the walnut cabinet for it that finishes it off nicely.

Also remember that these receivers are 35+ years old. I do suggest spraying the pots with some nice Deoxit 5 to lubricate and condition them.

Anyway, have fun.
