Don't forget to add the optical input/output for audio.  This is kinda huge for those interested in hi-rez music that don't want to spend the big bucks on a FW/USB DACs.
FireWire 800 is also huge IMO especially if you have several drives and it's about twice as fast as USB drives (not a huge deal for streaming music or video, though).

More software focus differences includes:
* one source for drivers.. no more going to ATI/nVidia to get your graphics driver updates, Apple provides those along with other updates as well.   This even includes printers.
* Time Machine is probably one of the best back up solutions out there that comes "stock" on an OS.
* There are family prices for upgrading the OS, iLife and iWork.
* For the Linux fans, about anything you can run on Linux can also run on Mac natively.
* mail, iCal and address books that come with the OS are actually usable and there's support for gmail and other online solutions.

The optical input and output are Mini-Toslink jacks integrated into the analog input (line in) and analog output (headphone) jacks.

BTW, the Apple MacBook Pro and the former, Powerbook lines are very long lived.  I am still using my really, dented, beat up 12" G4 laptop circa 2005.  It has slowed down considerably but it is a tank...with dent and everything else.

Hey!

Yup, I'm writing this on my 12" G4 from mid 2004 :D This little computer still works. But it is now somewhat limited due to the fact that I have 10.3.9 on it and most newer programs and some site have moved on  :? Even with that I'm still amazed that my still works and get most of things I need done. :D

The problem with the so called "unibody" really suck isn't it? Maybe the old body type is better but a pain to it it open.

BTW... I see that the new MacBook Pro are switching to the new Intel Core i chip now. Well, I've been thinking of getting a new Mac but have been holding it off for sometime now. You know I think I will keep using my good old 12" G4 for a while longer... or until I can't use it for certain programs or web sites anymore, than I will get a new one. :D

Take care,

I think the Air was the first Unibody, wasn't it? Maybe that's why they didn't put any I/O on it  (I have one, love it, but another USB port would be handy... :D )

I prefer the unibody as it feels really solid and the i7s are extremely fast and are posting benchmarks that rival the HP and Mac Pro Xeon workstations that are only a few years old.  So to have a laptop of that performance is really amazing.

Talking about the 10.3.9, I am still unable to find the Tiger disc that came with mine after me looking for it.

There will be a point in time when the laptop will stop functioning or being practical, but in other terms, you did change the Hdd, which means, it will last a couple more years.

I still use mine, and instead of talking my bulky 15" Unibody to work, I began to use the G4 again, and it does what it is supposed to, it is perfect for presentations and that 12" compact factor is unbeatable, even after all these years.

If you ever decide to get a new Macbook Pro, I would go for the 13" but the 15"s with the I core chips are really, really tempting.

I say, no more upgrades for me for the next 5-6 years.  I got too many computers and will need to pare down some in order to justify another computer.

The more I compare my VelocityMicro gaming I7 core chip PC vs the MacBook Pro Unibody I have, the more begin to realize, Apple has an edge over the black evil tower all mainly due to the Microsoft Vista factor.  Vista sucks.  Microsoft sucks.  Cannot forgive its clunkiness and glitches that rear its ugly head with something as basic as printing.  Pathetic.
