Ribbon Dipole Surround Info
« on: 18 Apr 2010, 07:58 pm »
I have been looking for centers and surrounds for my RM30M based HT and have an opportunity to buy a pair of RDSs.  I now find myself waffling on this opportunity because since I cannot hear or even see these speakers in person.  I am having a difficult time visualizing how they will look in my HT and I don't find professional or owner reviews that really talk about how well these speakers fill the side or rear surround role.  Yes, I see the straight-on picture of the surrounds but I don't see any views from the side or with grill covers.  I find older suggestions for surrounds on the forum but never hear John or anyone really recommend RDSs.  Until this opportunity came along, I was going to buy 4 Emotiva ERD-1s since they are reviewed well.

Do others have Ribbon Dipole Surrounds in a 7.1 or 5.1 system?  Do you like them?  Do they blend into your HT environment?  Are they critically recommended surround for HT use?

Hi Gary,

As you can see, I am "QUITE" excited about the Ribbon Dipole Surround

This picture shows what they look like with the grills on.

Thanks, John - they look very nice with covers and I can see their relative size.  Since I posted, I re-searched the forum and did find more info and recommendations (though they are mostly older).  The VMPS site says the surrounds are 13" deep so I can figure how far they will protrude when mounted.  I also went through the forum Photo Gallery more carefully and saw a view of an installed LRC.  That also gives me some perspective.

Now I want to verify if my prospective pair have FSTs or not.  I still would love to hear from users who have reviews of the sound of the RDSs for HT use.

Thanks again for your efforts!

Gary

I now have a pair of Ribbon Dipole Surrounds.  I was supprised to find that they came with no wall mounting hanger or hardware or anything.  How have you-all hung them?  I can make shelves, I guess....

Great buy Gary, You'll have to let us know what you think of the sound once you get some time to play with them.

Hi Gary,

Because of their weight very few (that I know of are) are wall mounted.

Most are on stands, bookcases, or shelves on walls.  IKEA has some very nice book case/CD/DVD case type racks that work well (and you can store your software in them at the same time)

Also many have found that they work well just above your head level when seated.
