Has anyone used after market fuses in their Bryston amps?

I have a 6BST Pro that uses 6 fuses.  I have heard that replacing the fuses can deliver some benefits to your amplifier.  Has anyone ever done this?  If so, was there any benefit?  Any drawbacks?  Any suggestions what-so-ever would be appreciated.

I have no idea.....however i know there was a person on this site who replaced his fuse in his BCD-1 and then and major service issues a while back......personally i leave the fuses to Bryston.

Just enjoy your good amp and leave the nit picking about fuses alone.

I tried (borrowed) an upscale fuse in a single-fused DAC and heard no difference.

Without getting into a debate on whether the sound of an amplifier can possibly be improved with "better" fusible conductor materials, the fact that some of the very expensive "hi-fi" and "audio" fuse manufacturers actually indicate directionality for a fuse is perhaps the dumbest thing I have heard in many years of audio, and is enough "jive talk" for me to look elsewhere.

Hello

Take the fuse and go down to a well stocked electrical supplier. You will probably find the same fuse but at a 1/10 of the price. If you want to try different fuses just try different ones there and swap em out.

I think I would be a little worried about voiding the Warranty. :nono:

My guess is that Bryston took the "fuse issue" (if there is such a thing) into account when it designed the gear.  I doubt if they spent research/design time to produce an excellent piece of gear only to undue their efforts by installing crappy fuses.  It just doesn't pass the "Ho Ho" test! :)

I don't think it's a warranty issue.  A fuse is a replaceable item, and as long as the fuse has an approval by IEC, UL or similar, it should be OK to use.

I think it's only the issue of wasting good money that could be put to better use, if improving sound is the goal.

Actually, there is probably no issue here at all!  Everyone derives some sort of fun/happiness out of this hobby/passion, what ever it is.  So, if you get a tickle out experimenting with the effects of fuses, cables, etc., go for it.  It's your "hobby" to enjoy as you see fit and to h... with anyones opinion.  Personally, I haven't any first hand evidence of fuses influencing the sonics, only opinion!  But I have to admit that after 40+ years in this hobby I am still surprised from time to time. :)  So, I would be interested in finding out what you discover!

Thanks for everyone's opinions.  I have heard both sides of the coin, and I wanted to hear more before I went any further.  I am still wondering if anyone has bought fuses before; or has no one ever had to change them out?

If I decide to change out my fuses, I will certainly post my results!

Well many of us actually can't, newer Bryston amps come with circuit breakers instead of fuses....

My take on it is that it depends on what you're trying to mod. If it's some mass market product made to a certain price point, then you may be incrementally successful with some component swap (as they originally used the crappiest possible) but you'll soon hit the limits of the design. Which was also geared toward price, not excellence.

With products where the company behind them strives towards excellence not price, mods may do more harm than good.

I agree, Napalm. You put was I was thinking into better words that I could have.

Bryston doesn't build to a price point.  They build the best products they can, then make different models based on amount of power and/or features needed.

I had an old 3B 110v that I tried to run on a transformer at 230V when I moved overseas.  I have definitely gone through fuses and replaced a handful until I figured out how everything connected.  Bought them at a hardware store for a few bucks for 5 or 10 - can't remember exactly.

Seriously though - fuses affecting things in an audible way?  Are you also going to change the fuses/circuit breakers in your house that feed the socket?  What about the sub-station that feeds the house?   :o
